LASD loses 3 in 1 week
My former dept., LASD (Los Angeles County Sheriff if you didn't know), has lost three deputies within a very short time.
Dep. Bain died during a pursuit on his motorcycle when a driver swerved into his lane. Dep. Rosa was murdered as she was at the rear of her personal car parked in her friend's driveway. Her service weapon was near her, but not shot. Robbery suspected. Dep.Wilms was found yesterday in a building across from one of my former stations. It appears he was cleaning his gun and accidently killed himself. The mag of gun was found removed, but speculation at this point is there was a round in the chamber. My thinking and it is only based on my knowledge when I was still working, is that he carried his weapon with the safety off as some of the deputies do. This is against policy, but some feel obviously it is safer to have it off if they need to use the weapon. If so, he obviously forgot about the round in the chamber. A dep. I worked with years ago did the same thing and ended up shooting himself in the knee. The holster was defective and fired the gun as he was reholstering it while sitting in the patrol car. If the safety had been on, he wouldn't have been shot. I did not know any of these deputies and for that I am thankful. Tho I'm retired now, I of course still feel sadness. It would be much worse for me personally if I knew them, as has occurred in the past. The most recent past was the retired deputy who died in the L.A. Marathon a few weeks ago. I worked with him for 7yrs. Please, all of you active leos, be as safe as you can possibly be. Be aware of your surroundings and double and triple ck. your weapons prior to cleaning or inspecting them. |

Retired, thanks for reminding us that we aren't invincible. I know that I grow complacent sometimes, and, unfortunately, it takes stories like this to humble me down. I'm very sorry for the loss of those three, and all the others that we may not ever hear about.
I'll leave this little quote my Dad said to me when I lived at home and would leave for work: "Keep your eyes open, and your head down." Shane

retired: What kind of pistol was the dep. involved in the accidental shooting using? I saw a thread on another board about that incident, and they said he was shot in the chest. That's really sad! Three lost in such a short time frame.

I don't know which pistol he was using. The issued one is a Beretta 92F 9mm. The dept. allows personnel to purchase and use an H&K USP 45cal.
I worked Industry from 83-87 and have been retired for 3yrs (03-31-06). The building he was in wasn't there when I worked there; it was an overflow parking lot. |

It's always bad to hear stuff like that. Hey retired, my brother works for LASD. He worked out of Lennox for about 12-13 years doing the TO and Dectective gig.
He's been with SEB for about the last 3 years. It's a different world on the left-coast. Congrats on making it to retirement. Marty |

solocycles, thanks for the congrats, but it was a medical one and 3yrs earlier than I wanted. I was supposed to retire with 30 this June. Actually, with the new fantastic contract they obtained, if I were still on, I would have stayed for 2 more years (46% is a good reason to stay).
I'm going to pm you. |
