CA LE Hiring question

I'm getting ready to graduate next year with a Masters in psychology. I entered the ARNG back in 97 while I was 17. I was stupid at the time, and became a unsat participant. I have an RE 2 for not completing my contract. Although it was a General discharge under honorable conditions. I plan on telling the 100% truth when the time comes, but will this hurt me?

I have the same thing...I got hired. Just be honest and apply to alot of agencies. Eventually one will pick you up. The is a BIG shortage of applicants in CA right now.

BTW, you will probably have to put yourself through the academy. Very few agencies are putting people through right now, even with the shortage.

I'm not in Cali.

But I was stupid also in the Army, ended up with a uncharactized discharge (usually reserved for those seperated in training, but I was in over two years and got one). One department had concerns over it, I explained the situation and they were cool with it. I'm a cop now. Bottom line is, just be honest and explained your situation and you'll get a job.

Funny thing is, I've been looking into getting back in the Army reserve, now that I'm older and understand how the world works.

Not all depts make you pay your way thru the academy. LAPD and LASD are two that I know of that don't (unless things have changed since I retired 3yrs ago.

Now, LAPD does require you sign a 5yr contract with them or repay them the cost if you leave early.

As much as they are hurting, coupled with the fact some are giving hiring bonuses, I would guess a lot of them won't charge you for the academy. Of course you will have to verify that with each one.

IF IT COMES UP, JUST BE HONEST. TELL THEM YOU WERE YOUNG AND STUPID. GETTING YOUR MASTERS SHOWS MATURITY AND DEDICATION.
PEOPLE EXPECT YOUNG ADULTS TO MAKE MISTAKES LIKE THESE. IT IS WHAT YOU DONE SINCE THEN THAT COUNTS.

GOOD LUCK

a lot of folks have something in their background to get you kicked for one reason or another, depends on the agency. putting yourself through the academy is a plus, shows initation and determination, good qualities. just make sure to look at the depts you want and the academy's. Went through one of the last "stress" academy's 15 yrs ago. paid for the pain myself, but worth it in the end personally. per pushup it didnt really cost me much
