leo training
I am applying to my local law enforcement office for a job and when I did the application they said if I were hired I would need to go to the academy and there would be a physical evaluation that would have to be passed I do work out about every day but I am still over weight and was wondering if you could tell me what to expect and what they are looking for?

Depends on where you are; different states/agencies have different standards.

if the department goes by the sheriff's standards in my hometown, you can be a couch potato that has a gut that hangs to your knees, and also can't shoot a gun worth a damn and still get a job there.

In IL we have the "power test" for new hirees..... 1.5 mile run in about 13 minutes, bench press 95% of body weight, pretty simple crap like that

Like others have said, depends on the department. Mine doesn't have any standards, however, to get certified here you have to pass state/academy standards. They are pretty basic, 30 something pushups, 30 something situps, 1.5 miles in under 14 minutes.
I'm not that fat, but lately I've developed a decent gut. So I need to get back to the gym. |

1.5 Mile Run
ILEA Standard - 16 minutes 28 seconds Holy crap. You could walk that. Utah's is 12:12. We break it down by age group. Even 60+ year olds have to do it in 16:07 or less. The rest for 20-29 year old males are Pushups - 30 / minute Flexibility (sit and reach)- 17.5 inches Situps - 40 / minute The state doesn't require vertical jump or bench press, though my dept requires a bench of 75% body weight, and 300M sprint in about a minute (can't remember exact). Other additional requirements may exist per dept. |

Here in WA (at least in King County) it's 38 situps in a minute, 35 pushps (no time limit), 300m dash and 1.5 mile run. I can't remember the time for max points on the runs.
