Two law enforcement deaths in the same day-same event
While watching the news last night, I discovered two leos; one active with LAPD and one retired from LASD, both died from heart attacks while running the L.A. Marathon yesterday.
I worked with Deputy Jim Leone when I began working at Men's Central Jail in L.A. We worked in the hospital section and strapped down Pcp suspects who came in (it was just starting back in the mid 70s.). Years later, after working at separate stations, we ended up at the same one and worked together for 4yrs. This was his 11th marathon and evidently he was under a dr.'s care for some heart problem, but ok to run. He collapsed at the 3rd mile. He was 61 and retired in 2000 with 26yrs on. He leaves a wife and daughter. It's always a tragedy when someone in LE dies, moreso when it is someone you know and have worked with. My heart goes out to his family and the family of the LAPD officer. |

Sorry to hear that.

My thoughts will be with their families. I came across a sobering fact while goofing off on the internet; a lot of LEO die on the job of heart related problems. There is an amazing amount of heart failures listed on the NYPD's memorial page for those who have died in the line of duty. To all those LEOs out there (from a rookie), STAY IN SHAPE! The job is physically hard on a person. The average life expectancy of a retired LEO is 6 yrs after retirement.
