On the way to the range (my CHL has not come in the mail yet.) I keep my firearms behind the seat on one side and the ammo/mags on the other side. I drive a standard cab truck, theres not a whole lot of places in my truck I can't readily reach from the driver seat! And I'm not about to toss them in the bed either, I have yet to be pulled over while on my way to the range, but in the event that I do I'm assuming that it will be at the officers discretion.

Depends on your state.
I am in Texas and with no CHL, I just make sure that none of my guns are loaded and no magazines are loaded or in the guns. The guns are in cases, zipped up and the magazines (empty) and extra ammo are in a zipped up case. All of this stuff is in the back seat or trunk, not sitting in the front passenger seat. Just make sure it looks as if you made the guns not readily accessible or at the ready and you should be ok. If you live in a crazy gun control state, like CA, NY, NJ, CT or MD, you really ought to check your local laws, but for most common sense gun control law states, this ought to be in compliance. - Brickboy240

Now what are the laws if you live/drive within 1000 feet of a school?

There are none that I know of here. State laws may be different though. I'd follow the same guidelines set out before by other people here. I don't see how being near a school would make a difference (unless you want to sell tobacco or are a child molster).

but it doesn't apply to transportation to and from residences w/in 1000 ft of a school. Otherwise, it would infringe on the constitutional rights of the homeowners. That applies to businesses, sporting events, and the like.

Even though they say they arent lawyers, not legal advice, blah blah blah, check packing.org. In NJ (yes we are a gun control state), gun has to be locked, unloaded, in trunk of car with ammo separate.
