I'm black and i was in your exact same situation. lived in a bad "hood" as you call it, i was new so they had to test me. i got my car broken into, got into fist fights and the likes. i carried my 9 even before i had my ccw, i luckily just didn't get caught. you know how i solved the problem? I MOVED. a holes come in all shapes, sizes and colors. it really doesn't matter.

WOW that is intense! I am sorry for you and your family I once lived in a neighbor hood similar but not as bad moved out 10 years ago. The way I see it and I have read your post in its entirety is if you don’t want to kill move.

I'm not going to justify my reasons for stating the color of their skin, nor the reason I specifically noted 'not to sound racist'. But If you actually knew me, my history, or my friends. You'd be apologizing right..about.....now..

To address the other responses. Your probably right, and I'll convey these opinions to her. Thanks for the responses everyone.

It's not about being black or white. I've met people in this lifestyle on many sides of many fences. But when you have a friend call you up and tell you 'I overheard them saying they were gonna get that white boy' knowing exactly whom they are talking about. You realize why race is brought in to play. It's the entire reason they still try to harass me, and only me long after Monte is locked away.

I never thought starting this thread would lead to an arguement, but I guess that's okay

Might as well close this mods. All the really usefull responses have been gotten, and from here I only see race-related arguments insueing

dont worry about the race card stuff, its all crap......lets say they built a nuke plant in the neighborhood, the values will go down too, or if a new railroad was slated to go thru the hood....values down, garbage humans that are a waste of skin moving in, values of property go down.....same answer to a number of different problems

Yep, moving is the best thing you can do. Hate to say it, but its true.

Forget the race issue brought up earlier. Hell, even in my current neighborhood (which is probably 60% white and the rest is a varied mix), I have met more scary and creepy white people than non-whites. Don't judge by skin color alone, you'll miss out on knowing some very nice, helpful and interesting people. Its funny, but my favorite neighbors are from Argentina and Moldova, not the ones with fair skin and blue eyes like me.

Scumbags come in all colors - don't forget that. The only person I ever had to pull a pistol on in my old neighborhood was as white as I am. The latin, black and Asian people living on my street are the last people I would ever think would break into my house or vandalize my car. My Bolivian born neighbor is ten times more leery of strangers walking our street than I am.

Most of my cautions go up in relation to an individual's class..not race. If you're wearing gang/urban type clothes or some other type of scary attire or covered from head to toe with piercings and tatoos, I don't care what shade your skin is...I am leary of you. Scary attire does not include traditional dress worn by foreign born non-whites...ok?

Yes, you need to move...and I thihnk it will help you try to not judge by skin color first.

I understand the desire w/in your mother to keep her home So many memories. However she needs to sell, before the values decline..Within todays markets she can probably realize a nice profit, and upgrade into a law respecting neighborhood, have better digs and probably have a little bit to put away for a rainy day.

It's clearly not about race but a significant criminal element that is growing unchecked in your neighborhood. Unfortunately most police responce occur after the fact I wholly agree you must defend yourself, when the **** comes a knocking. However the after process for defending yourself can be very lengthy, costly financially and emotionally draining to the family.

Talk to a Realator, get an idea what her house can bring. Start taking your mom out for Sunday breakfasts and make sure you take her around new sub-divisions etc. They more you take her window shopping the eaisier it will be to seed her thoughts with "time to upgrade."

Keeping herself in a neighborhood that could easily result in the loss of a loved one Is simply too "mule headed" as my beloved granmother would say.

You need a video recorder, its virtually impossible to defend against video evidence. Plus keep a log book of journal entries times dates activities,names etc. to coincide with the video. Another handy thing is still photographes of involved individuals.

I too was in a similiar situation. Grew up in Baltimore, one of the first houses I remember living in sat on a street where they were only 5-7 houses occupied. The house I'd stay I grew up in was nice but the area starting going down hill. Made friends with 2 brothers and then their older brother moved in. We'll get into fights with a few guys who had like 10 cousins. My friend got his window broken a couple times. Your only option isnt moving but its probably the best one. You could wait until these people get older and possibly mature. Some of the punks we got into fights with just grew out of that whole thing and are either doing something with thier life or more focused on selling drugs. I never had a problem with the 20+ drug dealers when I was younger, it was the people the same age that for whatever reason didnt like us.

I'm half black and I took no offense to what you said because I know exactly how it is.

I also grew up in a neighborhood like yours. I lived with every race you can think of and there were problems everynight. I can't tell you how many times I went to sleep hearing not only sirens but also gun shots. Hell, my father had to carry his .357 mag to take out the garbage, during the day!! It's parts of our society like this that make us really feel discouraged. I give you a lot of respect for keeping your cool thus far, you deserve a lot more respect. I agree with moving. My parents were able to get me out of there before I went down the wrong road. Most of my friends from that neighborhood are dead or in jail, but somehow I made it out and I am 4 months away from being a LEO.

Even though there might be problems in every neighborhood, you need to try to surround yourself with good people. I've learned from my experiences in the "hood" to be tolerant of other peoples ignorances. I hope all of these replies have helped you decide what to do. Be safe. Keep us posted...

Anybody remember the old Charlton Heston movie, where some calamity has befallen mankind. During the day it's basically just him scavenging the city's for food and fuel, and at night he has to hole up in his "castle" that has huge flood lights on the roof to fend off the light sensitive zombie?

Maybe try that, Illuminate the outdoors better then what you have now. Might scare them off, or away. Or improve their long distance shooting skills.

Look at what many quickie marts do, they pipe in "soothing" music to the outside of their stores to annoy the youngsters and keep them from congregating outside the store.
