BUG Options
Im looking into getting a BUG. Per departmental regs, the weapon must meet a safety inspection, be of sufficient caliber (no minimum standards documented---all at discretion of the lead firearms instructor --LDFI), be able to qualify per departmental DUTY standards, and pass a safety carry inspection. In other words, the weapon and carry method must be cleared by the LDFI, AND qualification using same carry method is a must. I have opted to go for the off hand pocket carry method as I prefer not to have to carry in an ankle holster. Nothing wrong with ankle hoslters, but not what Im looking for in this case.
I have narrowed my options down to the following and would like your input if you have experience in this area: Bersa .380 Keltec .380 Keltec 9mm Most of all Im looking for easy operation, accuracy within 7 yards, and RELIABILITY. What are your thoughts? |

Let me put it this way;
I've got a KelTec P3AT, a SW 642, and a Kahr PM9. I carry the Kahr. It's smaller than the airweight, more reliable than the Keltec, and more accurate than either. I cannot say enough about the PM9 for a small hideaway BUG

I've got a Bersa .380...I dunno how your department duty qualification is, But I routinely shoot posibles on ours with my XDs and I am pretty darn sure I couldn't pass it with the Bersa. Its a pretty good "get away from me" gun, but at 25 yards? I think you would be better served with a 2" revolver or a compact version of your duty sidearm if one is available.

when I was carrying my Beretta 92, Id toss the Beretta 9000 on the ankle, as it accepts the full size 92 mags (with sleeve)......since I had the fullsize mags on me, I wanted the BUG to be compatible.......so obviously Ill be acquiring the XD 40 SC soon.......

Unfotunately for duty I have to carry the USP 40. The compact version isnt small enough for my needs. Ive heard the Kahrs are nice, but they are more than I wanted to spend right now. I may just have to suck it up and wait until I can afford one.

Once again, I'm with Mr. TRT. The ability to carry the same caliber could be priceless to you. I, for one, am proud to say that I can carry right at a full box of ammo on my person at all times in uniform. That's security right there. I don't have to worry about needing to get back to the cruiser to reload when my three mags are empty.
Also, remember; your safety is priceless, as well. If you have to get the credit card out to get a piece that you are comfortable with, however you want to carry it, do it. If you wait until you can afford it, you may not need it, God forbid. The smallest .40 cal. I know of is the Kahr. It's a good weapon. By the way, why not an ankle carry?

As to the price, you should be able to pick one up for around 500. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...?Item=44401553 A bit more than the KelTec, but, IMHO, a far better made pistol.

Well, I agree that the ability to carry a BUG in the same caliber could be very valuable. I do not foresee ever having to strip rounds from any of my mags to load a BUG though. With 40 rounds (3-13 round mags and 1 in the pipe) that is close to a full box. If they ever run dry Im in deep **** anyway. The BUG to me is my "get off me" gun in the event of very close encounters. It is not intended to take the place of my duty weapon if it ever malfunctions. I am wanting something a little tamer than the .40 as my BUG due to the fact that I intend to use it solely as a weak hand weapon, and I am not as proficient weak hand as I need to be. As far as the ankle carry, as I stated earlier theres nothing wrong with it. I have a 2 inch j frame .38 that I regularly carry in an ankle holster. I am looking for a pocket gun to carry as a BUG and off duty. I wear shorts a lot of the time and an ankle holster isnt feasible for shorts. Off duty the BUG would supplement the XD 45 that I carry Off duty as well. |

I carry a Kel-tec .380 and it's always worked fine for me.
Are there better options? Maybe, but I think my kel-tec is just fine.[/code] |
