Virginia State Trooper killed in line of duty

One of my high schools friends' brothers was killed over the weekend... The story I had initially heard was as follows:

Wrecked vehicle is chillin' there... he goes to remove a .30-06 rifle from the wreckage by pulling it muzzle-first towards himself... trigger snags on something, and the bullet "just misses" his vest (would it have even mattered?).

Now, reading about it in the news... It's incredible... Some of the news outlets call it a "shooting", in the sense that some criminals shot at him... Some of them say the gun just "went off" while the vehicle was being moved... So this is going to get chalked up to some anti's statistic on cops killed by firearms...

I don't know what happened now.

But in any case... I can't imagine how that played out... Getting shot in the chest by a hunting rifle, no one knowing what happened.... the confusion and panic... And the process of dying....

Horrible...

It is very sad and unfortunate that this happened. I can't help but wonder why somebody would pull a gun towards their body by the muzzle, even if this is the only way to retrieve the gun make sure your body isn't in front of it as you pull on the muzzle.

He may not have pulled it towards him, that's just what I heard before the news had anything on it.

The only other choice that leaves is that it in fact just "went off".

that story really sucks......its a shame, but mistakes are made all the time. who knows what he was thinking at the time? its easy to "monday morning quarterback" things people do in an instant, Im pretty sure if he thought about what "could" happen, he probably wouldnt have done it....obviously. sometimes "**** happens" and that will be no comfort for his family and friends....just a bad deal

From what I was reading on Officer.com the gun discharged as they were moving the truck - a Ford Ranger that was in a SVA and rolled. Either way, it's terrible. Below is an excerpt from the article.

Quote:
"The shooting incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on Route 649 in Clarke County following a single-vehicle crash involving a Ford Ranger pickup truck that had run off the road and overturned onto its side. As the damaged pickup truck was being moved, a firearm inside it discharged and Trooper Manion was struck in the chest. The other trooper on scene was not injured."
