Anyone here from AZ?

Im in the process of actually turning in an application to Flagstaff right now and Im wondering if anyone here works as an LEO in Arizona and what you have to say about it. Do you have any experience with Flagstaff? Any available positions in your town? Any advice you could provide?

Thanks in advance!!

Flagstaff is a nice town. It is a small college town, but also greatly fueled by tourism to the Grand Canyon.

They get a good amount of winter weather but with moderate temperatures (i.e. rarely below freezing daytime highs).

By the mercy of God, The Border Patrol will call me up and assign me to Arizona, Hopefully in Tuscon or Yuma. I have a friend who lives out near Flagstaff and says it's very nice out there. Not a "Big city" but not a "little town." Whatever that means.

Im really hoping to get some info from an LEO in Arizona that is familiar with Flagstaff or the surrounding areas (looks like its all conifer forests)

There are other important questions that I have to like the department firearms policy, how many sworn, ride-a-longs available, academy information, etc.

I found some of your answeres in the links below. I am not a LEO yet, but my brother inlaw is a deputy for Yavapai County and they go through same academy as Flagstaff (NARTA). As for sworn it looks like 114 and 57 civilian. Flagstaff is not huge city but it has pop. of about 64,000. Trees, trees and more trees. Ride-alongs should be as simple as a phone rerquest and filling out waivers (or at least that is how it is with my brother, a Sargent in Glendale). Not sure what you want to know about firearm policy, but in AZ as an officer you can carry everywhere, no questions asked. Also you get to carry a back-up if you so choose. I know I am not a LEO for Flag but I hoped I helped some.

Thanks for the info. As far as the firearms questions I had, it pertained to duty firearms, as in available carry, backups, etc. Can I carry my own piece? What limitations, etc.

FYI though, as an LEO, you can carry almost anywhere in any state. Thanks to Prez. Bush for that one. Truly an awesome thing.

Academy information is probably my biggest question. How long, what to expect, etc.

ETA: Thanks for the academy info... I missed that link when I posted this thread.

Locally I have only seen sheriff deputies carry anything other than a glock. My bro inlaw said he could use various versions of glock or 1911, inadditon to his secondary (had to be 40cal or higher), back-up (caliber of your choice), AR and shotgun. 5 weapons total, Holy Cow! Sadly, I think Flag only allows Glock but I am not 100%. I'll ask around to see if I find anything out.

My wife's brother is a Maricopa SWAT sniper/K9 but I don't know any LEOs in Flag.

Just spoke to one of the Sgt's there. He talked to me briefly about the department and the such. Department policy on firearms is GLOCK. They issue the 22. You can carry your own G27 (compact .40) as backup, and you can purchase your own M4, but it can't be overly modified.

Not too bad, though I was hoping that I could pick and choose my primary carry. I love my HS2000 and my Sigs. Oh well, at least its not a big heavy S&W5906 or something along those lines.

He also talked about how the dept. is fairly tight nit and family oriented, which is exactly what Im looking for. I grew up in a small department (70 or so sworn) so I like it when you know everyone else who works there with you.

Application inbound.
