What would a leo do here?
This is being discussed (somewhat) on another subforum.
Here's the scenario. You are off duty, armed, and someone tries rob you of your wallet. That someone is unarmed. How do you handle it? First situation, they don't try to touch you. Second, they do reach for you. Thanks. |

First, if you let someone rob you without them showing a weapon then you are stupid. Someone can't just come up to you and say give me your money without threatening you in some way. If and when he threatens you then you can legally pull your gun to protect yourself. If he just says, hi, give me your money then just laugh in his face and tell him you don't contribute to panhandlers. If he escalates the situation and threatens you then you can pull your gun.

As a LEO show him the business end of my carry piece.. Order him to the ground and go from there. I would yell Police as I draw my weapon. So that he knows that I am a Police officers and witness hear me identify myself.

Part of this came from some people saying you can't protect your property (the wallet) with a firearm.
Yeah you can walk away from the fool and I would, but if he reaches for me before I can get away from him I like to think I have the right to at LEAST show my firearm without being prosecuted for brandishing. I can't say I know for sure what a non LEO CCP owner CAN do but I wanted to know what LEOs can or would do. |

I'm not a LEO, but if an unarmed man attempted to take my wallet? He'd walk with a limp for the rest of his natural life, and probably have limited use of his elbow, and wrist of any arm that was extended.
In that situation? I was attacked by a person demanding money, and I defended myself to the point the threat was no longer there... Then provided first aid until authorities arrived. Don't poke the bear, he may poke back. |

We were in a parking lot walking toward lunch when a guy comes up and asks for money agressively, not robbery but agressive panhandling. One of our group was a female LEO off duty. She just pulled back her jacket which let her badge show and said "Get lost." He did.

Dont know how true this is, but it makes sense. I was told by a couple local LEO's that if you have to defend yourself. Then Provide First Aid, that shows remorse, and guilt in your actions. And it will be brought up in court that you tried to render aid to a person that threatened you, suggesting that you should never have done what you did to defend youself. So I wouldn't even touch the person after a defensive situation. Thats what Medic's are paid for. That being said, If the person was bleeding out, If i had the proper tools to protect myself (rubber gloves in such) I MIGHT try to control bleeding. I guess Ill make up my mind when it actually happens. But I'm not going to risk myself in court and further offensive actions from a perp over a broken arm or leg or both. You have the right to protect yourself, but you also have the responsibility to provide aid when required.. At your level of ability or not.
It's like refusing to give somebody a phone when they need to call 911, it's a crime! |
