I've used them all, I like most of them, but I would suggest S&W hinged.

Get chain cuffs for academy. You will be learning cuffing SPO's and as a newbie, you will find hinged difficult to use. Cuffs are difficult to apply to a resisting suspect and chained has more "give" than hinged. However, when you hit the street carry chain and hinged. Hinged are preferable for prisoner transport as they are more difficult to manipulate and possible get out of. I once had a 17 year old get a cuff off with a paper-clip while being transported to jail. That was a learning experience....

....Nevermind, found the answer:

"Most modern handcuffs in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom can be opened with the same standard universal handcuff key. This allows for easier transport of prisoners and keeps one out of trouble if one loses one's keys. However, there are handcuff makers who use keys based on different standards. Maximum security handcuffs require special keys."

Keys can be purchased on line.

(example)
Code 3 Tactical Supply - Low priced police gear and tactical equipment. - Handcuff Keys

....and theres TONS of videos on YouTube showing how to open handcuffs (even when double-locked) with everyday items including Paperclips, your watch, etc.

Interesting note:

"In Japan, if someone is photographed or filmed while handcuffed, their hands have to be pixelated if it is used on TV or in the newspapers. This is because someone who had been arrested brought a successful case to court arguing that being pictured in handcuffs implied guilt, and had prejudiced the trial. Similarly, in Hong Kong, people being arrested and led away in handcuffs are usually given the chance by the policemen to have their heads covered by a black cloth bag."
