I always wondered if the spikes worked well, I have bitten it on the ice more times than I care to remember..luckily I have been fortunate enough to not be seen.

I too wear the side-zip Magnums and like them. No break in, and feel like slippers. Goth them on sale at LA Police Gear.

I've got the Danner Striker GTX side zips. They were about $140 I think and LOVE EM. They are more comfortable than any tennis shoe I've ever had. They are just now starting to get a bit worn on the tread on the bottom after two years. The side zip is a must at least w/ my dept. We only have 5 guys so getting called out in the middle of the night of a common thing and it's nice to just slip them on and zip em up and your ready to go. They have done great in the snow w/ keeping me warm and dry as well.

I would recommend the ones on the link that I posted without a doubt. They have saved my ass (literally) more than a few times.

They are not that expensive, and really come in handy on those cold, snowy, shi**y nights.

Do you guys think getting a boot that can be re-soled is a good idea?

Are they going to be as comfortable as one of those fancy "running shoes" boots?

I am a corrections officer and I wear Bates Ultralites. I have had them for about a year and a half and the soles are still holding up with all the time I spend on my feet. If you want them to shine, I would recommend Leather Luster.

Do you wear out the soles before the uppers? If so, then yes, provided you have a pair of boots with replaceable soles that you like.

Personally, I wear out my boots from the inside out. I'm not sure why, but I shred the insides of my boots before the soles are worn out.

To put it bluntly, from my personal experience...YES! I have been wearing Danner Recon's for quite some time. Unless you totally abuse the leather on your boots, a good boot made from quality leather (like danners) will last a LONG time. Plus they are probly the most comfortable boots I have ever owned. My feet NEVER hurt after work, even after a 10 or 12 hour grind. I have had the same pair of danners for about 3 years now, and the leather is nicely broken in, but still looks pretty much new. I have replaced the soles once already, and will probly need them done again after this winter. I get about 1 1/2 years out of a pair of soles. The last time I had them redone, I got Vibram Sierra soles put on, and love them compared to the ones I had on there before that.

Nice thing with replaceable soles is that you can change your tread pattern to meet your needs rather than being stuck with whatever comes on the boots. It's also much cheaper to buy new soles over a whole new pair of boots. Last time I got them done it was $50 to get it done, AND you get back YOUR own broken in boots, not a new pair that need to be broken in.

All I do with mine are spray the dirt off with the hose when I wash the squad, and occasionally take a rag to them to get the rest of the dirt off. I also give them the danner leather treatment rub about every 3 months. It helps to preserve, protect, and break in the leather and keeps the leather in great shape. A little Kiwi Black and a spit shine to keep them looking good, and you will have some of the most confortable and best looking boots on the department.
