I have a pair of Danner Recon's that I changed over to the Sierra sole, the last time I got them re-done. In the snow of WI, I have no problems with their performance. As far as ice, I would agree that they are not great, but no duty/uniform boot is made for ice.

When it gets icy here, its time for me to get these out! They have saved my a** more than one or two times. Especially the night that we had an ice storm, had a woman fall on the ice in front of her house, which of course was in the middle of the steepest hill in town. FD was called out to assist with lifting, but they werent having much luck either. I was the only guy who could walk up the hill other than walking in people's front yards in the snow banks like the FD had to. We ended up using the rescue sled to lower her down the middle of the street, while I stood in the middle of the street holding the rope, with 3 firefighters wrapped around my legs.

If your still, slipping and sliding around with these on, you are going to have more problems than your boots.

Its nothing a little duct tape won't fix.

I like the 5.11 A.T.A.C. boots.

For duty I've been wearing the Oakley Assault 6" "boots". While they are comfortable (running shoe like) they wear way too fast for me. I guess it the combination of my gait and weight.
I've recently switched back to my old pair of Danner Striker GTX. They are comfortable and waterproof with Gore Tex.

This caught my eye..
It's the Striker boot with a full lace cover/shroud. Pretty neat.

Have a new pair on standby...
These are some of the most comfortable boots I've ever worn. I personaly like the standard 9 inch, not a fan of the side zip.

Thanks for the post about the new Danner's. Had not seen those until now. They might get a good hard look next time I need boots. However, I always have a hard time breaking away from my bullet and bombproof Recon's.

They are light and durable. I have had mine for 14 months now and they look and function great; this is after being worn during the Academy (everyone can imagine the wear and tear they received) and daily use. I would suggest checking them out before you spend a lot of money on a boot that may not last or be very comfortable. Oh, by the way, I wear the 6" without the zipper but they do have 8" with a zipper.

I just bought some 8" side zip Original SWAT boots, cause I needed an all-leather boot (long story) and they are very comfortable. Very little break-in needed.

I was thinking of getting some of these. They seem to be a good boot for the price, and I have to have a "shineable" boot with a "plain toe" or whatnot.

Oh, just read the policy. "Black plain toe shoes, Jodhpur Boots, or Full Boots"

Whatever.
