Really hard to beat a pair of Danner's. As anal as I am about my uniform, I require a boot that will produce a parade quality shine. I have a pair of Blackhawk's as well, but they are delegated as my "rough" duty boots. Not sure what the allure of the side-zip is..one more thing to go wrong or fail!

Maybe I am lucky or just fortunate as I have never had a zipper malfunction. I love the way Danners look, sadly they do not fit my feet. To each his own.

I haven't had any problems with my Bates Ultralites with the side zipper. They last maybe 1 year to 1 1/2 years, but that's not too bad for a boot that only costs around $65.

I wear my old pair of Bellevilles everyday for work and I am on my feet for about 12 hours a day when I end up in bed. In fact I like them so much I have 3 pairs, 2 in black and one in Rough Out tan to wear with jeans. The only downside the Vibram Sierra soles suck on ice or snow. My two pairs of black ones are each pushing 5 years old with some very heavy use and abuse.

When I wasn in the AFROTC I used 10 inch, all leather Corcorans as my "Show Boots" and the Bellevilles for my "Go Boots" for out in the woods and daily use. I put SuperFeet insoles in all of my boots.

IMO, side zipper boots are just something waiting to go wrong. Break a zipper and those boots are done.

I cannot think of much worse of a minor problem outdoors to ruin your day than to be limited to essentially one boot and one flip-flop.
