Domestic Despute Resolution
Tonight as I got home from work, my neighbors were began a huge argument. The houshold includes other people and two infants. I though little of it until there was a thumb on the side of the house and a bunch of cussing and screaming back and forth. I figured they were just having a very heated argument, but after listening for another minute and hearing move "Get off me @E*(!" and so forth, I called the cops. I then stayed on my front porch watching so as to allow the jurk next door to see me so he knew he was being watched until the cops arived. She came busting out of the house to try to borrow my phone, but the cops were allready pulling up.
To get to the point, I feel like I may not have done enough because she was getting thrown arround, but then I also am not trained to deal with situations like this, so I'm guessing knocking on his front door would not have been too bright of an idea. What is the best way to deal with a domestic destirbance.

I realize this is mainly for LEO discussion, but I hope no one minds that I posted this here. I figure it's the best place for advice with this situation.

Island,
I've dealt with MANY domestics in two years as a LEO, and first and foremost, I want to tell you that you did EXACTLY what you should have. In Kentucky, it is a departmental regulation for my S.O. and also for the Kentucky State Police to have a backup unit present before we make entry into a domestic situation. Rule number one in being a police officer is GO HOME TO YOUR FAMILY when your shift is over. Had you gone over there, you never know what could have happened. He could have shot you or her or God only knows. By waiting on your porch, you put yourself in the position to get a vehicle description or direction of travel had he left, but also had he seen you, he would have no reason to think you were out there waiting for him. GREAT JOB. BTW, did the jackanus go to jail, or did the cops leave without him? Shane

I didn't watch once the cops came...I figured that would have been too much as a neighbor, but I didn't see him or hear him the rest of the night, but when I got home from work he was home. At least he, the woman, and baby appeared to be enjoying a nice supper. I'm guessing it's alcohol related because just seeing the recycle bin at the end of the week tells lots of tales if ya know what I mean. Thanks for the feedback though. I really appreciate it. I also am very greatful for the service that all LEOs provide for me. I'm in debted to you all. God be with all of you and your families!

Island,
Probably a good idea to go back inside. I'm sure that most LEO's would prefer no rubberneckers when they go to a call. I'm sure they appreciated you resisting the temptation to watch. As far as the recycling bin goes, after doing the job, I don't see how there are any LEO's that drink after seeing how it makes people act... Mike, Thanks. You got more time on than me. It's nice to be dittoed by a veteran when you're a rookie! s

the booze just makes an asshole a bigger asshole that much faster...a couple of brewskies after a 3-11 shift is a nice relaxing time with a few of the boys...... but not everyone drinks, and thats cool too !!!

I'm not saying people shouldn't drink, but I am proud to say I've never had a sip. But it's true what you said. If you're an asshole, it'll magnify it, and if you are sad, funny, happy, flirty, or whatever, I've seen it bring it out of people.
I guess the reason I said that before is because that's why we get called most often. People don't normally call the police and say, "HELP! My husband's telling me jokes!"

islandboy, I also agree you did the right thing. You made the call so she got some help that night and you stayed physically ok by not going over to the house.
HulkXD, you made some excellent points. 2yrs may not be a lot of time on, but when it comes to DV, it's more than enough; I'm sure you have been to many (too many I'm sure, I know I did). |
