On the verge...but..

For the past few years I've always had an interest in law enforcement. This year I've thought extremely hard about it and have reached the point where I've actually printed off the employment application (Sheriffs office employment info- Employment). I want to do it and know I would be succesful given the opportunity but the money is getting in the way. I am not money hungary but I do have bills that my current salary can cover (mortgage, cars, etc..), unfortunately in order to get into law enforcement I would take a pay cut of about $14k a year (entry level) and that won't pay the bills . I'm trying to find a way to get more stuff paid off so I can pursue this new career.

I'm 29 a bit overweight but not overly so. I work in IT and have never had a law enforcement type of position. Should I even bother? I've gone back and fourth hundereds of times..even kept me up last night thinking about it. Damn I wish I had done things differently when I got out of school

Any helpful insight would be appreciated..donations?

I'm kind of in the same boat...however I am only 21, and I have finished all of my GE's in college but no degree yet.

I would probably not take a pay cut from my current position.

I'm thinking my only way to make this work is to get all of my bills paid off... not easy to do but I'm determined.. I really want to get into law enforcement.

That def. would be hard, but if you can make it work it is worth it. Just keep in mind that the pay won't be the only huge difference. Factor in that you will also probably start out on night shift. This is a very different lifestyle that you need to be ready for. You will also work weekends and holidays. As I said, it's a big adjustment, but well worth it in the long run.

I "gave up" a very successful career to pursue my goal of being in LE. My pay is less than half what I was making before. Luckily my wife and kids are very supportive. My wife stays home with our kids, and we've learned how to tighten our belts. If you look at LE strictly from a monetary standpoint, you'd have to be crazy to choose this career. This is a calling, and if you don't have that inner drive telling you this is what you were made to do, don't do it. If you want something bad enough, you can always find a way to make it work. Sometimes we forget that houses, cars, etc. are just THINGS!! I'd rather be driving an older car and living in a smaller house, doing what I love, than being miserable in a job that pays better!! In the end the choice is your's. If you aren't 100% committed, you aren't going to make it. Good luck!

I'm not interested in this career for money (what money?!!). My concern is if I were to pursue this now it wouldn't cover my current bills :0( I'm trying to get in contact with someone whom works in the department to get more details on the salary starting out.

You guys need to come to california... I am going to Oregon to be a Sheriff but a good friend of mine is a Sheriff here in Contra Costa county(SF Bay area-east bay) and he makes about $5500 a month after taxes... I guess pay in the Eastern States really is vastly different than here.

I made about $95,000 last year. Will make a bit more this year.

My best advice is to check into being a reserve first. See if you really want to give up that lucrative career or if you even like the job first.

Are you Sac Police or Sheriff? I think he made like 110k last year gross... but he works quite a bit of overtime and doesnt really do much aside from work. LE is a stable, paying career. If you have the mental capacity and moral fitness to do the job it can be well worth it.
