Employment Question for current LEOs

For the last 20 years I've been flying airplanes and was most currently a pilot for a major airline. In light of being laid-off after 9/11 the current state of the airline business as a career is a miserable, difficult, and extremely poor way to go. I always said that if I couldn't fly I'd love to be in law enforcement. This month I turn 40. Have you ever seen someone my age or older join the force? If so I'd like to know what you'd recommend as a start. Do agencies ever hire pilots directly or do you need to be with that division for several years? Any advantages or disadvantages of going to county, state, city? I live in the Cincinnati area but would be willing to go just about anywhere there is opportunity. Thanks

Todd

Sure. I have seen older folks join the force. Problem was either they had prior LE experience or had to go to work for a county. In my case the last few folks we sent to the Academy were older than 40. One guy was older than 50. All passed.

Look around. If you are also helicopter qualified that might also work even more in your favor.

Thanks for the response slotback. I have some helo time but I'm not rated in helicopters. That's something I can do. I just wonder if any agencies hire directly into the flight department or do they always take from within. Hmm. Well at least I don't feel too old now.

Jettubby,

Ive gone up a few times with these guys and they are revamping the system.......they fly fixed wing and helo's......Ive gone up on surveillances in the Astar, but they use blackhawks too (mostly down south)

here is an article......

customs (the air and sea part) is now CBP..... google CBP pilots, or CBP air and you'll get some hits......I dont know about the age for the pilots but the 1811's (agents) maximum I think is around 37 or so.....pilots may be different based on experience...... good luck
