LEO's oppinion on civilian CCW

How do officers of the law generally view general public being able to carry weapons arround? Doesn't it make your jobs harder knowing that there are more weapons out there? I was also talking with some friends who said that even if CCW are used in defense, that the person is usually screwed over in court just because they have a CCW. Is that true?

I'm a former LEO and I've always favored civilian carry. It has been my opinion that the ones I don't have to worry about are the ones who will go through the legal hassles involved in getting a permit, take the training, pay the (sometimes) exhorbitant fees to get what should be considered a right, not a privilege, and carry responsibly. As far as "more weapons being out there" the permit holders are not the problem, and the bad guys will still be out there with their guns.

Of course, that is just my opinion. As a former LEO, I'm now considered a civilian, and since moving out of Wisconsin is not an option for me, I will continue to push my legislators to pass the CCW bill here.

As XDFan said, those who will go through the hassle to get one aren't the ones I'm worried about either. Actually, in my small town, It's kind of comforting to know that there are plenty of good citizens out there who ccdw and will back me up if the poop hits. I am for it, and KY has it.

And, to answer your last question, no, the public isn't screwed if they have to use their weapon. They have to pay to get a small piece of plastic, and the court system in KY understands that they are responsible people.

I wasn't too conerned with even running into one with a ccw since I worked in S. Cal prior to retiring. Usually it was off duty officers, not civilians.

I wouldn't have any problem with a civilian have one if they went thru a legitmitate course and their backround ck was fine. Realize, the Chiefs and Sheriffs don't really represent the line people when they come out for or against something. I believe the majority of the line officers/deps favor it.

XDfan, why have you tried to obtain your National ccw under HR218 signed by Bush in Oct of 2004. It's good for a year and lets you carry around the country. I would suggest you ck both with your present le agency and your former one in Wisconsin. If you meet the qualifications both in being able to obtain one and pass the qualification shooting course, you are good to go. Good luck.

I really appreciate the feedback from all of you. Thanks for the idea of the nation wide carry permit too.
