respect for officers
Lately I've been watching all sorts of cop shows.. normal cops, dallas swat, hot pursuit, and the other police chase videos. I know cops aren't often shown appreciation in their job mainly due to the type of people they have to deal with. I have a lot of respect for what you go through on a daily basis, how much you risk just to protect others. I'd always be willing to provide information to an officer if needed. Anytime I see one stopped on the side of the road I immediately move to the other lane as soon as I can and if I'm not able to I make sure I keep going straight ahead. You guys do a dangerous job, and some of us make it even more dangerous by not giving you the room you require on the side of the road. Just wanted to say thanks for doing what you do, and I for one appreciate what you do (even if you are a pain in a butt watching out for speeding tickets) hah.

If I had 3 wishes my final wish would be for cops to have a "**** the police" detector.
When used properly, this detector would sense when a cop was in the vicinity of a person who has ever said "f!$k the police". This way, when an officer arrives to a call (car break in, etc) the detector will go off and the cop can say "f%#k you". Whenever I hear someone say "Man, I hate cops" or "f^$k the police" I always say "You remember that the next time someone throws a rock through your back door or steals the wheels off of your car, dont call the police, deal with it your own damn self big man". I like the police, I smile everytime one drives by my house, it makes me feel warm and safe inside. The police in turn like me, they dont ever have to bother me, or do the dreaded paperwork because I am no bother to them.

Even tho I no longer serve in that capacity, thank you for the kind words. It's too bad I didn't meet more people with those sentiments when I was on the streets.
I'm sure the active leos also appreciate your thoughts. Take care. |

I have a lot of respect for the police, in general. It's only certain cops I have a problem with. Most cops are hard working and actually try to do a good job, but some just use it as an excuse to become jerks.
Like the Sheriff Deputy who drove around with his brights on all the time just to make people flash their headlights so he could ticket them. (Got my cousin) Or the Highway Patrol Officer that claimed he clocked me doing 85 mph from 2 miles away on a busy interstate at night when I was doing 70. (Was passed by a sportscar a minute earlier that promptly exited the highway). Or the city cop who waited for me to travel a mile down the road so he could give me a ticket for doing 50 in a 30. (Edge of town. I had been doing 50 in a 45 and was slowing down. Was doing 30 when he pulled me over and wasn't aware of him until he turned on his lights) In those situations they are just jerks with a badge. I still treat them respectfully, but I try to take the situation to court whenever possible.

Another reason it is hard for me to just say "way to go cops", is I have never talked to a cop and it has turned out good for me. Even when i call them for something, they question me as if I did something wrong. Thats only after it takes them 45mins to an hour to show up (if they decide to come). I am thinking, hey buddy do you think I would have called you over here if there was a reason I should go to jail. Maybe you should be askin me what did the guy look like that pulled the gun on me and which way he went. Why i was coming home so late and what I did after the fight are not great questions. But let me go outside and go 2-3 miles over the speed limit and one will pop out of nowhere to perform his civic duty. I am sure they are doing something somewhere every day that is keeping me and/or someone I love safe. But I don't see it, so my opininon tends to sway a bit when I have to deal with jerks that are wasting tax dollars. There are good people who are cops and then theres jerks. |

I know you all don't think I have respect for the police. Well, I really do. I know its a hard job and definately a thankless one. One of my good friends from high school is a Sergeant in Auto Theft here in Houston and I hear his stories and its amazing what he puts up with. He goes above and beyond every day and I respect him for that. With him, as I suspect it is with alot of people on this board, its a sort of calling...not a job.
What I don't like is the politically correct nonsense that is keeping cops from...well...being cops! It seems like the officer on the street gets it from both ends - from the criminals and the top brass. We have had some dismal police chiefs here in Houston. Basically puppets of a liberal mayor and city council. Usually, these chiefs were also looking to climb farther up the ladder in the political arena and it showed in their priorities. They put themselves and their image above the needs of the officer on the street. From affirmative action (a freind of mine was turned down in the 80s from HPD...told he was white and they needed to hire minority officers) to not being able to ask if a perp is in this country illegally (in Texas, you can imagine how frustrating this could be). Yep, I feel for the officer on the street, but their upper brass is usually a worthless bunch of politically correct rubber-stampers. Just like our public education system - I have the utmost respect for the teachers, but the administrators of our ISD should be replaced. Don't think that I dislike you guys...I do not. Actually, my friendship with an HPD officer has grown for me a respect for what they do that I did not have when I was younger. Be safe out there, - Brickboy240

You guys wanna know whats really dangerous? Crab fishing. And the various types of mining. And about the other 10 professions that rank more dangerous than being a cop. And if someone did steal my rims or throw a rock through my window i would love to take care of it myself but the problem with that is then i would get arrested for unecessary use of force. Nothin against cops But i wouldn't mind takin care of my own s*** If the law would allow me to.

I don't mean to discredit any dangerous job out there with my post i started here. There are lots of dangerous jobs out there. Just merely wanted to say thanks to officers who choose to deal with the scum of the earth on a daily basis so hopefully none of us have to. They do their job to protect us, and tehre's always people out there wanting to harm them because of that, or sue them for doing their job.

I was told a long time ago that 30% of all the people you deal with are jerks. Accept it, embrace it and move on. Likes too short.
