I agree there are some fat and lazy out of shape leo out there, but they aren't the majority. It is shameful they let themselves get to that point, but that's another story. The gripe I have about your statement WARHEAD'Z is the problem you seem to have with a leo being on the cell phone and smoking a cigarette or eating a donut.

Do you take any breaks during your job. I suspect you do and wouldn't be surprised if your job is like a lot of them: 2 15 minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch break for a 8hr day. Well, a lot of le dept.s don't have scheduled breaks. You take them when you can get them; when it's slow. But, if a call comes, especially a hot one, the break is over.

I recall many a day not eating the whole day and barely having the time to make a pit stop as I was chasing the radio all day, going from call to call and writing reports. I remember throwing my food in the trash while eating on the hood of my car upon getting a hot call (which sometimes turned out to be nothing). I also recall having people come up and asking me questions (like why another deputy gave them a ticket) while I'm eating, interrupting my dinner; but that was part of the job.

So, when you see this, "fat and lazy out of shape cop" smoking a cigarette, eating a donut or talking on his cell phone, go ahead and be upset about his weight, but don't begrude him a break, he deserves one just like you and every working stiff or do you disagree.
I believe that the persons employed by the people to 'SERVE AND TO PROTECT" should be of prime physical and mental shape. The ideal of a person in uniform abusing their bodies with overindulgence of food, alcohol and tobacco does not cut it with me. Understand too that where I live, a LOT of the county deputies are "less than prime." The cell phones were not really mentioned as a negative issue. Except when that use distracts the cop from observing his post.

Barney Fife as a cop.....No way. I always hated the Gomer Pyle example of how the Marines are portrayed as on television too.
You know, I am frequently on the cell phone in the patrol car; usually because I am handling a phone request while en route to another call. Its called multi-tasking.
Sorry, I'm back. I didn't get the last few posts, because I was taking a complaint over the phone while talking to dispatch, while patrolling and looking for a drunk driver that someone else called in on a cell phone.

MMMPHHH... MHHPHHPHHHHHH.... Sorry, I had to swallow that last bite. What were you saying? Oh, right. The donut. I am so distracted right now, because while taking that last bite, I almost dropped my cell phone in my coffee.

I think that most people don't like cops for the simple reason that probably 85%+ of their contacts are negative. Usually a ticket of some sort, domestic violence, victims of property crimes with no chance of catching the bad guy.

I liken it to the guest on the Jerry Springer show who is asked why he's there. He says "No, but I'm sure it's not good". I think that response fits into most people's contact with LEO's. If the cops are around something bad is happening of going to happen.

I've been on the beat for 11 years, one of my brothers retired from the same dept. after 19 years and 4 shootings, including one from which he received the IACP officer of the year in 1994. My other brother has worked for the LA Sheriff's Dept. for 16 years.

Bottom line is it's pretty much a thankless job and the guys or gals who have turned into a-holes are egomaniacs of burnt out. But I think that most of us on the street try to do a good job.

Just my 2 cents,

Marty

P.S. Hey retired, talked to my brother and he recognized your name but couldn't put a face with it.

Solocycles, thanks for that info. If he has the 2000 photo album of the dept., have him ck pics of the sgts; I'm in there.

I'm also in the one from '81 as a deputy. I'm in the personnel section because I was injured. Back then, if you were injured, they had a manpower or limited duty pool; and used you werever you were needed. Now, if the Capt. doesn't like you, you get retired. Your brother probably can't find one of those unless he knows an old head. Tell him to be safe; you too.

LEO Talk

I believe we've all had both bad and good encounters with LEO's.

But anytime I meet one who is unprofessional and antagonistic, I just remind myself that I've dealt with others who have let me skate when I should have been locked up, or they've handed me a warning when it could have been an expensive citation. You have to take the bad with the good. That's life. Unfortunately for LEO's, most people only remember the negative outcomes of dealing with police officers.

Above my desk, there is a sign that reads: "For every action there is an equal and opposite criticism."

It seems so.
