that's too bad... after reading that story i can't help but think sometimes civilians shouldn't be able to own certain weapons, or registration on all should be required.. officers could know what they are up against as long as the weapon is purchased legally and registered. That being said it's easy to understand people's concerns with that. Sad that someone needs to use an assault rifle for something other than recreational shooting.

I wasn't there and will not comment on the officer's tactics. I will mention that my former dept's tacticts in a similar situation would be to remain outside the home, have the desk make a call and order all of the occupants out of the house one by one. Everyone would be cuffed and ck'd for weapons. The house would be cleared once there was sufficient backup. Once that was done, those who needed to stay cuffed would be and those who didn't, would be let loose.
The report didn't say if the wife was in the house with him after being outside either. Our dept. had the capability to run the loc's address and bring up info concerning past calls and occupants of the home and whether firearms had been involved at the loc before. Calling on the PA system if the phone call failed might have been an alternative method to get him outside. Tho retired, I feel the death of a brother officer and the injury of another. I was not Monday morning quartbacking them. If any of the above tactics my former dept. uses were not available to these two and they had to do what they did, I wish them godspeed. The best that can happen from this incident is it will be a training aid for the dept. and perhaps other depts. OIS usually are. |

After listening and watching all the TV reports today, along with interviews with Metro officials, I think the 2 officers (1 a Sgt) made a bad choice in attempting to go into the house, thru the open front door. The BG was laying in wait for them to enter.
I would have thought the officers would have called for SWAT, especially with a BG in the 2 story house. Who knows what anyone would have done if it was them? Had a simular situation near my house here, 2 years ago, with a druggie held up in a 2 story house, shooting at cops, etc. 24 hrs later, after over 100 rounds of gas into the house, they finally got him out. The cops were more worried about the 13 PitBulls inside the house!! The killed officer left a wife and 2 small children. John
