Alright, since some of ya'll want to see the picture, I'll post the pictures and try to give you some details, sorry if it's a bit long.

"Hand to Antler Combat"

Basically I decided to make a round to a field that sometimes had some deer. I drive into the middle of the circle and see a buck and a doe out there. I had my .300 winmag and 2 bullets in it, and while I was chambering a round, my buddy Mark ranges the deer to 243 yards. I'm hunting meat, so I put the crosshairs on the doe behind her front shoulder and drop her. It's during rut, so the buck runs off about 50 yards, and then he comes back smelling where she's at. The sun was getting really low, barely legal light and I could basically only see his antlers, so I put the cross hairs dead center between them, and he turned his head right as I pulled the trigger, so he drops. I go out and find the buck first, and he's still breathing. So mark pulls out his .45 and shoot the buck in the head, he thrashes around a bit and I think he's dead. So I walk over to the doe and tag her, come back to the buck and he's still breathing. Since it's dark now, I didnt' want a game warden to come by and think we're poaching, so Mark grabs a knife while I'm holding the antlers. As the blade barely touches the deer's neck, it kicks the knife out of his hand and stands up while I'm holding the antlers. I knew if I let go he was gonna gore me, but if I held on he was going to kick me. So I jerked his antlers down, need him in the side and "bull dogged" him; he got up again and I did the same thing again. Mark comes around the rear this time, cuts the deers throat, and the deer and I wrestled around on the ground more before he finally expired.

Please realize that I hate the suffering of animals, and this is the first deer that I have ever shot that it took more than one shot to kill. I did try to save the animal from suffering, and still don't know why he didn't die from the .45, because I found the exit wound from that bullet as well. He was shot with a 185 nosler ballistic tip bullet at around 260 yards (since he was behind the doe some). Because the bullet is moving so fast and large and hit such a small target, it didn't expand much. You can see the entrance sound just under his antler in the photo, and the exit wound was in the same place on the other side. Hope it's not too gorey from some of you. I did want to share this so people know to be careful around an animal, because sometimes a shot that "should" have put an animal down, doesn't always, and it can definately be dangerous.

I believe it. I've seen plenty of deer riddled by 12GA slugs and still keep on truckin. It's amazing.

The pistol was a 10year wedding annivesary gift from my wife two years ago...a Smith 629 in .44 mag. with "smooth as glass" trigger job. I shot this doe off my Dad's farm in Northern Missouri, open sights at 30 yards. Anyone could shoot well with this pistol, it was all in the gun, I am not that good. I used 240grn Winchester soft points. Knocked her clean off her feet. She jumped up and ran 1/4 mile. Her heart and lungs were destroyed and yet she got up and ran. Makes me rethink the potency of any handgun.

I had the scabbard on my chest/side custom made by a friend of mine. See http://www.stsgear.com/ for info about him.

After hunting with a big bore pistol in the timber, it will be hard to go back to a long gun...that was the most fun I've ever had hunting deer.
