I called Texas Parks & Wildlife

They told me that as long as it's center fire, I even specifically asked about .223.

Yes chad, .223 is perfectly legal to hunt deer with in the State of Texas. I agree with lots of others, you wouldn't want to use just any bullet, and not at extended ranges, but a .223 will definately kill a deer. Some of you have voiced concerns about meat, and I Just wanted to drop this information. If you're concerned about keeping both of the shoulders, just make a heart shot and you the bullet won't expand nearly as violently as it does when it hits bone.

Personally, I have shot coyotes running, but I would NEVER attempt to do so on a deer. I especially wouldn't try it with a slow moving shotgun slug. Ichy, that's your decision buddy, but I don't quite agree that "dead is dead". I don't think it's necessarily ethical to gut shoot a deer so it runs off and dies. I kind of suspect (don't know) that if you hadn't knocked that back leg off of that deer, it would have ran clean away and died from the damage, and you would have not gotten any venison. I'm curious, why is it that with a bow you'll take the time to get a perfect shot, but not with a firearm? Is it just because it's a little faster and easier to cycle the next round and take another shot or something? Either way, I definately wouldn't encourage running shots on deer to anyone. That's just me though, but I don't like busted guts.

Thumbs up

.223 is a great deer round provided you wait for the best shot and keep the shots close in.I shot a doe last year at 10yds in the neck! She hit the dirt like hit by a sludge hammer! I also only shoot winchester 64gr power point bullets at deer!

Had a GREAT time hunting this weekend.
I shot four hogs total...hit a BIG OL' Boar at about 75 yards and he sorta brushed it off...I did not know that giant boars have this armor plate from the front of their chest to just along the last of the ribs...so he probably is ok, the other hauled a$$ into the palmetto scrub and was gone. I understand that another group found him dead the next day...several pastures over.

The next morning I sat in a tree stand from 6:30 to 8:30 and didn't see a single shootable animal!

We rode ATV's around the entire property perimeter (6,000 acres for their lease), that took several hours. Then lunch, hit their shooting range for some fun! (I hit 6 of 8 shots from 50 yards with my digi camo 45...I think I'll hunt with that next time!).

Around 4:30 we went back out and started scoping for hogs...about a half hour before dusk we saw a couple hogs wandering in a pasture....we stalked them from about a half mile away and I took the big pig, maybe around 130 lbs with my AR from about 50 yards.

As we were walking back to get the buggy to go pick up the pig, little pig wanders out of the woods and I capped him with my pistol...S&W Model 66.

So, all in all a good weekend. Funny/bummer story...by the time we got the little pig, drug him back to the buggy, went to retrieve the big pig, it was dark. We ended up driving through some pretty rough stuff on the way out (hog root...I know why ranchers hate those things), the big pig must have slipped off the buggy and we were quite aways away and decided that she was not going to be good eating, so we left her for the coyotes.

Valuable lessons: shoot the right rounds...Iron sights co-witnessed through a Tacpoint red dot sucks in a dusky situation. If I am going to use my AR for hunting, I MUST have a good long range scope (I just can't see that good that far otherwise!)....and bring more beer next time!

Post Pics of your Hog!!

As you guys have seen I introduced myself and showed you my land in
HI! First post +pics That.

Someone asked if i have ever killed a hog on my land...and yes! With my ballistic tips in the good ole .270. the hog was about 200 yards away, my friend and his weatherby 30 06 shot and skimmed his neck...he ran strait away from us for about 50 yards then turned right and was running full speed across a field and i shot...dead center in his belly. he dropped instantly...we later measured the shot and it was 260 yards. its the shot im most proud of. its different makin groups on a stationary target hitting a full sprint animal. so again im really proud. i had to aim head high about 5 feet infront of the hog to hit him.

so here he his...and i didnt put this in my other thread to give the opportunity for others to post pics of their hog kills.

heres the ole hog...and my 4 wheeler...and you can see my digitals and boots from when i was in the marines.

yeah my hog and the rubicon 500 with my bear claws on it. you can see my belly shot on him too.

he was about 200 pounds...most people say he doesnt look that big but trust me if you were there youd know..he was huge.

the most amazing thing is that the hogs used to rut up my land so bad they destroyed 40 acres once. they were in HERDS of like 30 or 40. and id chase them on my 4wheeler. they illinois bayou goes thru my land and they swim like no tomorow! honest its unreal. i was even attacked once when i was checking the traps...he was behind a tree...i had my .270 but it was so dark that i had to carry a spotlight too and it attacked. he stood about waist high and i resorted to using my rifle like a club and bashed his face till he ran away. i have scratches from the tusks. another amazing thing is how fast a huge hog can run thru barb wire...unreal.

I'm amazed every time I see pictures like this...I've just never been in the woods anywhere that has wild hogs...deer, turkeys, bear, all that stuff, but never anywhere I'd expect to see hogs.

Something else I'd like to hunt some day.

First huntin rifle/first deer

This is my oldest boy with his first deer ever last fall. He was 12 at the time. This was on public land and after we spooked the deer a couple of times we caught up to him and he made a great 275 yard neck shot with his New England Firearms .308. Might be a while before he tops that one!
