I just don't know if I completely agree with "LEAVE THE AREA!" rule, leaving behind an unsupervised and possibly loaded firearm for some other curious and uneducated child to find and something VERY bad happen as a result of it. I know that this rule probably saves lives in the long run by removing children from the threat, but it does not remove the threat itself.

So my question is this. At what age would you consider it wise or safe to teach young adults that clearing a found weapon before leaving it to tell an adult is an option? Are there legal ramifications in doing so with anyone under the age of 18/21? Am I completely off my rocker here?
tarFoo's question regarding "...at what age...teaching young adult to clear a weapon....?" Got me to thinking. Any child who shoots with his parents should know how to clear their weapon.

Now... if my child finds a weapon outside not belonging to him while playing, he is not to touch it. he or his friend is to report it immediately by my rules. If he sees one at a friends house he is not to touch it.

If the weapon in question found is malfunctioning it could be dangerous to him and his friends if handled.
If the gun is involved in a crime, I don't want him to contaminate evidence by picking it up.

At what age is a child able to clear a weapon? Depends on the ability and training of the child and the weapon in question.
