Very likely canidate for spam, or some other problem causing poster. I posted his question here trying to help him. Once it was posted I have received a few replys back stating that they ALSO received this. I did research this guy and found out he is from Utah. Sadly I did respond to this email directly. Hopefully I am totally wrong on my assumption.

Snake-eater 1 and so-flo have also received these.

Hello:

Just purchased a NIB Springfield XD-9 and upon returning home an hour later, wiped off the factory substance on the receiver with a soft dry cloth and unfortunately, several spots of (very thin) bluing easily came off the upper receiver.

Now, there is a silver spot or two showing where the defective bluing was and would have occured at the store had they taken a soft cloth to it to wipe fingerprints and etc... off.

Obviously, this is unacceptable!

Pistol is still unfired / untouched / left alone and in the box. Also suspect that Impact Guns is surprised and had nothing to do with the defects in factory workmanship from this nice NIB pistol delivered to them for retail delivery.

Seems that someone may have been in a big rush or used very little of the bluing compound when hastily applying it to the model I received!

Again, this is unacceptable right out of the box!

What should I do?

Just don't give out your email address to people you don't know/trust.

It seems no matter what, we all get junk email.

One thing that can help a little...if you look at a lot of junk mail, there will often be a way to tell them to stop sending you email. DON'T tell them to stop. This only proves they hit an active email address.

If you have MS Outlook or some other email programs, you can designate email as "junk"...and block the sender...you will still get it, but it goes directly into the "junk mail" folder. I don't think Outlook Express (comes with Windows) has this feature, but I haven't used it in a long time.

Using web based email helps, but is inconvenient for some (like me).

NEVER EVER EVER open an attachent from a source you don't know. For that matter don't even open attachments from people that forward you every joke or whatever they receive. You know you are not likely to miss anything, and "trojan horse" viruses can come from people you know....some they sent not knowing, some send themselves...they read your friend's address book and send to everyone in it.

There are no jokes worth opening an attachment for.. There are no porn pictures, movies, etc....The only attachments I will open are if the email itself is from someone I know and they say specifically what the attachment is.

NEVER EVER open an attachemnt that has an "exe" extention. NEVER!!!!

Keep your anti-virus software up to date. AVG is very effective and very good and FREE...I have a friend that recommended it....he claims it is better than Norton and he should know (though I use both Norton and AVG just to be more safe)..this guy does computer work for the NSA.

Also for spyware (popups, malicious sites, etc.) Everyone should be using Ad-aware, also free and very effective. Check out the site and the awards it was given by different PC publications. "Spybot" is also very good.

That's one reason I use a mail program rather than web based....you can mark "junk" mail as being OK and it will go to your regular in-box.

Outlook is very good, but expensive since it's part of MS Office. But there are other mail programs that are stand alone and I've heard nothing but good things about them. I used to use "Eldora"..it was free then, not sure about now. It may still be free. Almost all software can be tried with a free trial deal. Ad-Aware and AVG are pretty unique in that they are truly free and permanently free. And very effective at what they do. There isn't much that's more annoying than getting infested with spyware and having a million pop-ups. Or worse....getting re-directed to websites you don't want to see.

My son has a laptop that is now unusable....he lost the installation disk, so it can't be reformated and the thing has so much spyware that going on the internet is basically impossible. So many popups that you can't see anything for more than a few seconds. Pisses me off since the only way to correct it is to spend ~$100 or more on a new Windows disk. I guess it's worth it, but still....the computer is only a year old and is useless the way it is now. If he had used Ad-Aware, it would have been fine.

Couple of things I use to avoid getting spam from things such as having to register on a site to get access when all you want to do is read a news story. Credit for finding these goes to Kevin Rose formally of TechTV. I used to watch the Screen Savers which is where I heard him talk about these services. He's probably not the first to use them, just the first person I heard talk about them...

Dodgeit
Have you ever wanted to download something but you were required to enter an active email address? Don't give them yours, dodgeit! Dodgeit lets you create a dodgeit.com email account without a password. The next time a site asks you for your email, enter bla@dodgeit.com (or whatever you want@dodgeit.com). Then head to dodgeit, enter your email, and get the link.

Another if you have a gmail account from Google is you can add characters to your address so you can filter certain emails out. For example if your normall email is biteme98989@gmail.com you can add random info to the front of the address with a + after the add'l text and it will still come to you.

Example: spam+biteme98989@gmail.com

Then you can create filters to deal with these emails and keep them out of your inbox.

One more if you're using Firefox (may work with other browsers) is to install the bugmenot extension. This is an app that links to a database of usernames/passwords for free sites that require registration. For example the NY Times, KC Star, etc. Just Google bugmenot for more info.

Delija, if possible you may want to contact the company that built the laptop. They may send you a new set of disks so you can re-image the machine. I swear that somewhere I remember hearing that one of my clients did that with either Dell or HP. They were in the same situation where the PC/laptop was un-useable and they had misplaced the OEM disks.


+1 to the free version of AVG anti-virus also. I install it on all of the machines I work on for family and friends. IMO products like Norton, etc are just to bloated with extra just and are almost more trouble than helpful.
