XD vs. Glock tolerances
I was at the gunstore looking to purchase a SC. I automatically was looking and the XD40 (of course). Then the guy tells me that the Glocks are better. He said the tolerances for Glocks were way tighter, resulting in less wear from sloppy movement in the slide, etc. Any truth to this? Does anyone have any real numbers or information about how tight the tolerances are for these two pistols?

BS, in fact lose tolerances is what makes the Glocks so reliable. And if anything is gonna wear faster it would be the Glock, as the XD has much beefier frame rails.

You would think that loose tolerances would make an inferior pistol. Interesting.

No, it aids in the reliability. Its why AK-47's are so reliable, and AR-15's are a little more finicky. The tighter tolerance aid a bit in accuracy, but do a disservice in terms of being reliable in adverse conditions(ie dust, dirt, mud, snow etc).

While I love my little G27 it was recalled to replace the frame rails do to some of them having failed. While mine was in the serial number range of those which had been identified as having been over hardened it showed no signs of the breakage which some had. Not wishing to take chances of it happening later I sent it in for recall/repair. I had to pay the shipping to send it in for the recall.....they did ship it back for free.
This "repair" really entailed replacing the frame. They added a letter to the original serial number on the new frame which indicates that the recall had been done. Then several months later I get a bill from them for core charge on the original frame. WTF I had shipped it to GA for the repairs. Apparently at some point they just shipped new frames instead of sending in your firearm. I contacted them and thank heaven I had kept the N/C invoice which came back with the G27 after repair. I phoned them and told them I had shipped mine to them for repair and they did not return the original frame to me. After I gave them the invoice information, they stopped sending me bills for the original frame but it still bothers me that they apparently didn't keep records of the serial number change. For all I know someone could have taken my original frame and made themselves a pistol with my original serial number on it. Now I have a paper work nightmare and never did get a written acknowledgment from Glock that they had kept/distroyed my original frame.

I believe this is one of the reasons that XD's are said to be the gun that out Glocks the Glock.

Prime media, which publishes stuff like Guns and Ammo, did a torture test for the XD that totally out gunned (pun intended) the Glock torture test. They shot more rounds and put it through the same kind of conditions as the Glock test, plus they bought an XD off the shelf and used it for the test, not a factory direct gun like Glock did for thier torture test. Here's the link check it out for yourselves!!!!!
http://springfield-armory.primediaou.../SPstory11.php Print this off and take it to that gun store clerk and see what he has to say then!!!!!!!

LtDan,
Do yourself a favor and shoot both if you can. I was only able to shoot the Glock because no one had an XD to rent in 9mm. The gun shop let me fondle both the G26 and my XD for a significant period of time before I bought though. I was extremely accurate with the Glock, the Glock was slightly smaller (better for carry IMO), and I preferred the Glock in every way except one. The grip angle was terrible. I could never understand how I shot it so well, so uncomfortably. I bought the XD9SC a month ago and I've never looked back. I'm usually not a homer for anything (in fact I use to think the XD was ugly), but the firearm shoots wonderfully and has been 100% reliable through my first 350 rounds. The gun is hyped for a reason. Believe it. |

While I enjoyed talking with the guys at the gun shop where I purchasd my XD, I was alittle annoyed at the way they were trying to sway me. The one guy (younger) was really pushing the glock on me. "look how fast I can field strip it" "look at how many holesters we have for it" "look at all the grips and accesories for glocks" blah blah blah.
The other guy was alittle older, and was pushing the M&P on me. Which I didnt want. The thing is...neither had much info or opinion on the XD. Which led me to believe they themselves hadnt really tried one out. Im glad I didnt take everything they said to heart, because I feel I made the best choice for me in the XD. As for reliability...glock vs xd... I cant say for sure, but I dont think reliability is an issue for either pistol. As soon as the XD gets some more customers and some years under its name, it will become clearer. J. |
