Safety question from a newbie

Hello all,
I have had my XD for a few weeks and it is my first handgun. I understand modern guns are designed to be caried with a chambered round, and the XD has both the trigger and grip safety, but what exactly do they do, the description in the manual is vauge. I am very aware of the role my brain plays in keeping myself and others safe, but how do the two mechanical systems work?

Thanks

Hey,

The safety trigger is a simple lever that prevents the trigger from being depressed unless it is disengaged. Basically it means that if the weapon is dropped or bounced around, the trigger cannot be depressed and release the sear.

The grip safety is also a simple lever that blocks the sear so that it cannot release without the grip safety being disengaged by being depressed.

+1 yeah, that's basically it.

The same-time combination of the two safety "systems" being disengaged is the only way your XD will fire.
