The 357 Sig is a humdinger. Velocity with 124/125 grain bullets equals or beats the 357 Magnums from a revolver. Accuracy is typically excellent and feeding is as close to flawlwess as you will ever see due to the bottleneck design. I have shot several critters ( a couple coyotes and a Nubian goat) with Gold Dots from the Sig cartridge and the results are devastating. I have even hit a prairie poodle at 110 yards (laser rangefinder-verified) and it turned him inside-out. It is definitely a potent number.
Downside is that ammo is fairly spendy and handloading is more of a pain than with straight-wall cartridges since the cases have to be lubed prior to resizing. Also, most ammo in this caliber has a ferocious muzzle blast (CorBon excluded), so it may not be the best choice at night. Also, some folks find the recoil a bit sharp, although I think it is controllable except in very small pistols. Just my $.02.

I just purchased a XD40 Service today... I originally wanted the .357 SIG version but the shops in my area just dont have them in stock and for whatever reason dont seem to helpfull in finding one for me. They had the XD40 on sale for $419 so I figured I could get the XD40 and later buy the .357 barrel. Later meaning as soon as I can figure out where to get one... and how much.
I like the idea of having the .40 for shooting around at the range but would really really like to carry with the .357 barrel installed when hiking in the mountains for protection. (bears and such) After researching I found the velocity on a 115 grain .357 SIG was simply incredible and is what Id like to have on hand should I ever encounter a bear on a trail. Anyone want to help me out and point me in the right direction? Where can I find the .357 SIG barrel for my XD40? Preferably in the satin stainless steel finish. Thanks guys.. (First post.... glad to be here!) |

Avengeance, you may want to rethink the light-bullet idea when bears are involved. What's wanted is penetration, and that 115 grain pill is more likely to piss a bruin off than slow it down. Bears have heavy bones, thick fur and skin, and dense muscles. Heavy, tough, large diameter bullets are needed for bear medicine. A 180 grain 40 cal hard-cast bullet at max velocity would be a good starting place, but remember...if some is good, and more is better, then too much is just right!
As for barrels, I believe EFK Fire Dragon makes 'em and possibly BarSto.
