Help please. When putting my pistol(XD-357) back together, just to check and see if dirty enough for a good cleaning, my slide has somehow gotten locked up very tight. I did not even take the barrel and guide rod/spring assembly out when I had the slide off. Have had this pistol for a couple of years now and never have had a problem with taking it apart and putting it back together before. Specifically, when I slid the slide assembly onto the guide rails from the muzzle end like it's supposed to be done, and it didn't even make it all the way back but close, before it tightened up on me. The only thing I knew to try was to lightly tap the back of the slide on a wooden table, only able to get the back of the slide and the frame flush with one another. But the barrel and the guide rod sticks out about 3/4 of an inch. So I lightly tapped on the end of the barrel, only making it move about 1/8 of an inch. But in doing this it felt to me like it got even tighter. Short of sending the thing to Springfield, what would any of you suggest? Like I said, I have taken it apart and put it back together many, many times in the past with no problems. This is a first for me. Have any of you ever experienced a similar problem and if so what was your fix for it? Thanks in advance.

Another tip, you are going to have to tap pretty hard since you did all that other tapping and got it locked up tighter. Just take your time, be patient and dont get frustrated.

Most of the stuck slides are caused by putting the guide rod on off center or by putting in an aftermarket rod with the spring on backwards.

Any other time and I would have said, yeah, probally right, I put the thing in wrong somehow. But, I did not even remove the barrel, and guide rod when I took the slide off. I left it all intact. Then put the slide back on. And the pistol was working great before I took the slide off. That's what makes it so hard to figure out how it could have happened. Any other suggestions?

You might have moved it off center just a bit as you put it back. It doesn't take much. Have you been able to remove the slide? Don't be afraid to give it a good whack, the gun is made to take a more pressure than you can put on it by giving it a whack on the carpet.
Remember the gun is made to use a controlled explosion to shoot out a hunk of lead at or over the speed of sound so a solid whack on the carpet ain't going to hurt it.

I got it!! Thanks guys. And I guess you are right. With a pistol designed to handle a lifetime of almost 40,000psi explosions, a little beating on the back of the slide was not going to hurt anything. I was just worried I was going to bend something and make it shoot 12" groups for the rest of the pistol's life. But no matter. It's fixed now. And I'm going to the range today, mainly to shoot my new Sig 239, but will bring the XD just to give me piece of mind that it's still shooting tight groups and not jamming on any of my normal loads I use for it. Thanks again.

Let us know how it goes.
I purposely locked up my slide several times, then used th method I posted to unlock it with no damage.
