good advice
loves2shoot has some good advice and I agree 100%. I always had trouble shifting my focus to the front sight. I fixed it by muscle memory. When I look a a handgun, any handgun the first thing I see is the front sight. This may be due partially to the range master at the academy but if you train your eye through muscle memory, habit, to aquire the front sight first and focus on it then your home free. This is where using a great weapon like the xd is beneficial because it is so pointable the rear sights that complete your sight picture are usually right where they should be. Good luck.
