Stiff Slide Stop Lever

Just bought an XD-40, and noticed that its very difficult to depress the slide stop lever to allow the slide to move forward and load a cartridge. I realize its new and possibly stiff, but this is REALLY hard to depress, moreso than any other handgun I've shot. Is this normal?

Yes

Yes, I think all of them are stiff in the beginning.

+1 If it's too bad, just pull the slide back and let it go.

The Suggested technique is rather than using your "slide stop" as a "slide release" after inserting the magazine use you off hand to slingshot the slide. The slide stop will release on its own. As well you lower the odds of the pistol not going into battery.

Just my 2 cents.. Spend it how you like

Edit: DNM has got the right Idea

I agree with AZXD40. I haven't owned my XD 45 acp very long and was in a bowling pin shoot and noticed many people doing that after slapping another mag in. I noticed that grabbing the slide with your hand works a lot better than trying to thumb that little release button.

Great advice! That works much better (probably better on the parts too)!

My XD45 Service was also a little tough to use the slide stop lever, but it soon loosened up a bit (or I got stronger )

I have always felt safe using the slide stop lever because I feel I can better make sure the weapon is pointed in the right direction when the slide releases.

However, I have never tried the slingshot method before.

Drop the purse and press it!

Sorry- just messin' with ya. They are stiffer at first.

I suppose hand size and strength would be a factor, but I always just depress the lever to re-engage the slide. My .45 service is pretty smooth for this.
My compact is still a bit stiff, but not a problem to just depress the lever.
I find it a bit faster to regain my grip after a reload if I'm not trying to use my left hand to slingshot the slide.

My CZ97B will drop the slide if you insert the magazine with extra authority. I think the glockers call this a tactical reload. Apparrently GLOCKs can do it as well...is this possible in an XD too or is it just an inherent feature of all automatics?
