Unhappy I broke my XD ... I think

I have several photos of damage just noticed during today's cleaning. I think this relates to the recent failures to eject (stovepipes) that I've been experiencing.

Follow this link and click on the individual photos to see a larger image.

While I've never noticed this damage before, I wonder if anyone else has seen if and if ie appears normal. I doubt it, but would like to hear from some others.

I've looked at the barrel and locking block for my Sub-compact and they don't show this kind of damage.

Any thoughts?

Send a message via AIM to The Tengu
Send it back to Springfield. That problem has come up before.

Lifetime warranty. Part of the reason I bought an XD.

Nope. There was absolutely NO spring or guide rod damage.

I only noticed it as It's been a week sincle cleaning the gun. Over the last week, I put about 600 rounds through it.

Actually, I started having stove pipe malfunctions on Saturday. Cleaned the gun on Sunday morning. Last cleaned it last Sunday. Nothing then. NO stovepipes until this Saturday.

Dunno what happened. Maybe Springfield can help!

Thanks for all your responses.

Did the extractor break? SA just replaced my locking block and extractor.

It doesn't appear that there was any damage to the extractor. I even grabbed a gunsmith friend and asked him to look at it. He didn't see any issues with the extractor at all.

He was pretty firm with me about the damage though. He insisted that the locking block and barrel shouldn't ever look like that and insisted that I send it back to Springfield.

I guess now's my chance to see how good the warranty is.

They even asked me to copy them on my shipping charges and they would reimburse me.

SA is really good about their warranty and will fix it either way but two thing come to mind that may have happened:

A. The obvious first thought is that something got in there like a persistent rock or metal shaving and chewed it to hell. Both of which should NOT happen with the way the XD is built.

B.You were shooting it with the take down lever up. This will cause your sear to be used as the stop as opposed to the FLAT part of it's forward stop. This will cause the slide to go further down the frame during rest and the barrel cam and locking block will disengage until the next shot where they are slammed together again. This creates slop/rocking and possibly the condition you have. If you ever look down and your "cocked indicator" looks to be protruding out a little far then put down your stupid take down lever, lol

C. you got a lemon

edit: (fix brain fart, the flat part is where the guide rod puts pressure.) This will cause your sear to be used as the stop as opposed to the rounded part of it's forward stop.

No question about it. Send it to SA.
