It sounded to me that the mags wern't falling free when he hit the button. I just have must read it wrong. I can see that the button would be hard to push I agree with this and that it is a good thing.

It sounds like he is saying that when he hits the button the mag is basiclly stuck in the weapon to a certain extent. if this is the case I disagree that this is a good thing.

tight mag release buttons on xd -40's

hi guys,
ok.. got a bi tone xd40 and springfield siad that is a common occurance with the weapons. not that is a good thing but how often do you drop a full mag. the release is very tight. springfield knows about but that is the way it goes for now,unfortunatly.....
I have a m+p and is is like butter.
you can..
1)push the mag springs up and down a bit to loosen the mag springs.
2)load the mags one short of capacity. this works well i have seen
3)deal with it..lol...the gun might loosen up after a couple hundred rounds.

I don't view it as "not a good thing". I carry my XD in a law enforcement setting, and personally I like the fact that it requires a little force to push that button. No accidental mag drops in a nasty situation - that could cost me my life. And you aren't going to do anything by pushing the mag springs up and down, bro. They are designed to stay loaded for a long, long time and still reliably feed - pushing them up and down a few times aint gonna do squat. Loading down one helps a very little bit, but I'd rather just suck it up and have full capacity.

Now, I have noticed that the mags rub a little on the sides of the magwell when fully loaded, and not when empty. This creates a *slight* bit of friction, but nothing that inhibits the mags from easily dropping free as designed. I can only feel it when I slowly load the mag. During a tactical or combat reload, you can't even tell. I'm assuming that it has to do with the magazine flexing ever so slightly when it's at maximum capacity, but I could be wrong. Either way, I like the way my XD functions, and I'm glad it is the way it is.

Just imagane a door with someone trying to push it open while still closed, now try to turn the knob. It's harder to turn the knob than when no one is pushing against it.
That is what I have found too. As for inserting full mags, I really have to slap them in hard when full. So the instructor told the class to load one off from a full mag and it will not be so hard, for the same reason as above. The mag spring has very little room to compress. I would rather give up one round and not have a problem reloading then the other way around.

All the military folks on here, is this not the case for say the M16 and such? Load the mag w/ -1 and they go in better? That is what I have heard but not being in the military, don't have first hand experience.

I took the mag release button out of all 4 of my XD's and polished the surface where it meets the release arm. I have no problems releasing a mag at any time. It will get better over time if you leave it alone, the parts have to work in with each other. Just my 2 cents.

i've read this is normal, especially in the .40 and .45 models. it's the spring tension and the location of the cut out in the magazine that make it a very snug fit. better for it to be difficult to remove a full magazine than an empty one I guess.

My new xd40sc is a bear to take a full mag out of. I have to push up on the mag while pushing in the release, then letting loose of the mag.

Thanks for the replies. Now that I actually engage my brain about the problem, it does make sense. I've never accidentally dropped a mag but anything is possible in the heat of the moment.

With M-4's you can actually force 31 rounds in a 30 round mag. It won't cause the mag to be tight in the mag well, unless the mag is broke loose from where the thing is pressed together. It will however cause the weapon to malfunction due to the round being so tight in the mag that the bolt can't push the round out.

My XDS 9mm, the full (16 round) mags drop cleanly when full.
My XD .40 Service, the mag release button is hard to press when the mag is completely full (12 rounds) but they are new and were VERY STIFF at first. Even left fully loaded for a week it's hard to get the 12th round in.

Same thing with my XD .45ACP Tactical, but I've shot it enough it's loosened up nicely.

Store the mags full for a while I think it'll solve itself with a lower mag spring tension.

I think the QC on these XDs is very good.
