Tension of the slide.
Is there a way to lessen the amount of force required to pull the slide back and load a round in the chamber. This is my only defensive weapon and my wife has trouble with it. She can shoot it just fine.

The only way I know how is some lube and working it to get it naturally loose... I dont know of any way to manually change it unless you start grinding it or somthing like that... Thats damaging though??

My wife had the same type of trouble. More practice (dry fire as well if you're ok with that) and she should get used to it.

as was stated.. 4inch .45 stuck pretty much at 18lbs (i have the 9mm service though, but i think its the same for each). wife hates the stiff slide on mine.. and in fact alot of other semi's. it sounds like your on your way to buying her a gun of her own. check out the SIG p226, or the Beretta 92F/m9. my wife liked both, but due to finances we settled for the M9.. i say settled, but its a damn fine weapon. iirc it has a whopping 12lb recoil spring in it making the slide about as easy as your ever gonna get in a semi auto. me and the mrs went everywhere and looked at a ton of guns, and those two where the most comfy for her. cheers

Try this:
Standing, place both arms so they are 1/2 or less extended, lean slightly more on your right foot which is placed slightly forward, push with your torso forward with your right hand while holding the slide with your left. It helps at first to turn the gun so the left side is facing straight down with the muzzle pointing away from you. Even small kids can "rack a slide" if you get the procedure down. |

while para's and knights suggestions are valid. i wanted my wife to have a weapon she was fully comfortable using. i also wanted her to have no difficulty what so ever in its use should the SHTF. suppose something does arise, and she's not able to use the weapon, or rack the slide a particular way , she may be taking cover, laying prone, etc.

While my suggestion may have a certain amount of sarcasm attached to it, I think it brings up an interesting point. A firearm is not always the best weapon to have. I truly believe with all the rapes and violence against women in this world, that all women should get some form of unarmed combat training, at least enough to get away from her attacker and get to help or a weapon she can effectively use against the bad guy. Strength comes from within as much as it does from a physical stand point. Women are at an advantage from the get go in a fight when they have a good martial arts or defensive firearms training because they are more aware of their surroundings and able to make it known to a predatory bad guy they are not to be trifled with.
There is one more thing Maybe it is time to get a pistol just for her now? Perhaps a 9mm?

Interesting thing that happened. I just figured it was new and it would ease up once the new wore off. A friend of mine has a Ruger .45ACP and showed it to me. Silly me has to see if the gun is loaded and I was going to ease the slide back just enough to peek into the chamber. I ended up racking a round into it because of the force required to peek into my on gun.
The hers gun sounds like what's going to happen. We talked about a few nights ago. I'm leaning towards a .38 wheel gun but that could change. |
