OK, This is stage one. I painted "Classic White" Testors paint #2720 for a base. It looked so cool, I figured I'd take pictures. Stage two will be "Ford Engine Blue" on top of the white. I tried the blue directly on the stainless steel, but it was really dark and could hardly see it. I will post when this is done.

What I did, was just lightly apply the paint, let it dry about 3 minutes or so. Then I dipped my paintbrush in mineral spirits and wiped it on a paper towel. Then I used the paper towel (with VERY little mineral spirits) and gently, slowly wiped it many times until only the paint in the engravings remained. It required a bit of patience, but the whole thing probably took twenty minutes... Don't just dip the paper towel in the mineral spirits because then you will wipe the paint right out of the engravings!

Well, I tried the blue, but I think I didn't wait long enough for the white paint to dry. Ended up with a messy result. The blue wasn't a consistent darkness and it mixed with the white a little.

I had to clean out the engravings with a toothpick. Then I recoated in white. I'll let it dry real good and try again this weekend.

The parts that turned out good with the blue did look nice, so its probably worth another try...

You need to wrap the paper towel around something flat, like a popcicle stick and rub over the part, this will stop (somewhat) the paper towel from getting into the engraving. But patience is the magic word.

A paper towel is not the best option. All of the fuzz reaches into the engravings and pulls the color out and smears it. I used a piece of regular white printer paper. It worked fine. You will have to go over the paint a few more times because it doesn't absorb the paint as well, but it will give you less headaches with smearing. Oh, and yes, only a small amount of mineral spirits is all that's needed. I found that out the hard way myself.

I'm with Chunky Munkey. Did you wipe the engravings thoroughly with some kind of solvent like Mineral Spirits? If you've done that is there a chance your gun may have very shallow engravings? On my gun the XD-45ACP is noticably shallower than the rest of the engravings and it's hard to get any color in the engraving.
