I had the same thing happen to me. Give your slide a couple days for the fingernail polish to completely dry, then try again. Mine ended up coming off. Also maybe try a different brand of nail polish remover.

This stuff is wierd, but it DOES come off...

I got some white fingernail polish and some acetone based polish remover last night I was maybe a tad slopy with the polish cause I was sure it woudl come off....

I covered all the engravings in 3 coats of polish, then took some cleaning patches soaked in remover, and gently rubbed off the excess.. it came out looking awesome, the engravings look great... BUT....

the metal around the engravings are slightly gray compared to the black around it seams that the fingernail polish remover + polish has sunk into the metal a bit... I dont know if that sounds odd but its how it looks

I scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed and can't get the areas where I "slopped" to go black.. I soaked the front of the slide in fingernail polish remover and it had no affect on the color, and this firearm is very new the factory date is may 2007 so I know its using the new finish

anyone know how to get rid oif this ghosting effect?, I almost am thinking about taking a diluted fingernail polsih and rubbing the whole slide, I would rather the whole slide be one color than have part slightly gray and part black
Try a black Sharpie Marker.

okay after a bit of time to breath and calm down, and stop freaking out that I might have destroyed my first gun...

I decided to try again

it came almost all off this time, so I figure im going to wait another day or two and try again.

the engraving looks nice though

Anyone have pics up of a bi-tone with the engravings colored in, just want to see what it looks like, the guns i've seen on here so far have been as Borat says "VERY NICE!" Lots of good ideas.

Testors Model Paints didn't work so good.

Maybe it's my technique. I'll try again, but it's hard to get the excess off while leaving paint in the engravings.

If not, I go to my niece's house and borrow a couple of crayons.

Ok, I do NOT recommend China Markers. It looked great, still had trouble getting the residue off but I figured I'd work on it later. Took it out a week or so after doing it and fired about 100 or so rounds through it and the white started melting out and now I have a smoking/flaming outline around the lettering... almost cool looking but not. So I'm going to try and get it all out and go the nail polish way.

Yeah, the nail polish seems to be one of the best permanent-type solutions for the time being, aside from using an actual lacquer stick.

Here are just a couple of quick detail pics of my XD. I filled in the engraving with blue Testor's paint.

What are you using to get the china marker out. I did that to the serial # for all my firearms and didn't have any trouble getting the residue off..?
I filled the serial in on all my toys for inventory purposes. Shows up better in the pics.
