thanks all....it is the pin, and it is toast....not just split like a roll pin should be, but split across from the factory split....it is in 2 pieces. upon further investigation, it appears that without the roll pin it allows the firing pin to stay protruding out of the bolt face after a shot is fired and the action cycles, then when a new round is stripped off the magazine the case bottum comes in contact with the partially exposed firing pin, preventing the round from sliding smoothly across the bolt face and causing a jam. (this is just my hypothesis and may NOT be the case, but im guessing that roll pins gotta do something useful)

I gotta say....I dont come to this forum much (which I guess is a good thing since it means I dont have many probs with my XD) but MAN when I do....you guys are super quick to reply, and very helpfull!! this place rocks!! Thanks to everyone who replied
