+P+ is not a standard.

+P+ means "Hotter than the +P standard".

Nothing is +P+ rated.

I see "+P+", and I think "OUR AMMO IS UBER TACTICAL POWERFUL SWAT USED LEO ONLY". It's the same as "Now, better tasting!", "Lite", and "Top rated".

Actually, the owner's manuals for my USP9 and USP45 Tactical stated that the guns were rated for +P and +P+ ammo.
I would personally never use +P+ because it will subject you gun to needless stress, but it was nice to know that the USPs could handle it.

Just because I have a low post count doesnt make me an idiot

I know all about the standard. My Baby eagle says its up to +P+ in the book.

Here is a good summary:
Quote:
The 9mm Parabellum cartridge (commonly called 9mm Luger in the US) has traditionally been loaded more lightly on this side of the Atlantic than in Europe. The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturing Institute (SAAMI) has set a pressure ceiling for standard pressure 9mm Para at 35,000 pounds per square inch (psi). By contrast, NATO pressure ceiling is 42,000 psi. In-between U.S. standard pressure 9mm and NATO spec, we have two options. 9mm +P has a SAAMI pressure ceiling of 38,500 psi. There’s no SAAMI spec for 9mm +P+; that’s just a way of saying its pressures exceed +P standards
So if the XD is rated NATO +P+ isnt an issue. If its rated SAAMI it may be a problem.

Thus my question...

I'd say stay away from it. The performance gains, even between standard pressure and +P are minimal at best. +P is okay every once in a while on XDs.

If you're using a 9mm Serivice Model, yes. I purchased some RA9TA for myself and a friend to shoot up, and emailed Springfield.

Reply from Tom Macke from Springfield re. Winchester Ranger 9mm 127+p+ (RA9TA):
Quote:
Due to the fact that our entire line of
XD pistols features fully ramped and supported barrels,
using +P and +P+ ammo will not damage your gun.
However, we do recommend that you make sure the ammo is
American made and is in new condition, not re-loads.
If you are planning to use +P or +P+ ammo, we recommend
that you fire it extensively at the range before relying
on it for concealed carry or self defense. Although +P or
+P+ ammo will not damage your XD, a steady diet of this
higher power ammo may decrease the service life of the
barrel & firearm.

Thanks, Tom
I can't give an answer regarding the advangates of it's use over +p rounds. I put 100 rounds through my XD the other day without a hiccup. Lots of fire and lots of BANG and a little extra recoil. I did notice, however a little unburned powder in the barrel after the 100 rounds. To me that says that a 4" barrel doesn't gain as much as 5" or longer barrel would.

Personally, I'd like to get my hands on a chrono and do some tests with this versus 127gr. +p in all three barrel lengths. Either Winchester or Speer has a short-barrel load, which means more/faster burning powder. Maybe the +p+ would work better as a short barrel load?

All that said, I'll not be purchasing any more +p+.

I have shot Federal 124 +P+ Hydrashocks in my XD 5" without any problems. Now I don't make a habit of this. Iv'e fired enough of them to know that they feed, extract and eject properly. Most of the time I shoot 115 FMJs. When I carry it I use the +P+ ammo. The 5" barrel will many times cause fragmentation and limit penetration if the velocity is far enough above what the bullet was designed for.

A whiel back I emailed Springfield about this and they said to go ahead and use +p+ as long as they arn't reloads. +p+ won't void your warranty as long as it is factory.

If you have an SC +p is OK but SA say NO on the +p+ in them...all others are ok..

A side note- My Hi-Point is +p+ approved, or at least the manual says so.

I'm going to load up some +++p+++ and see how my XD's do.

I'm only kidding.

Like others have said, I seriously question if there is any advantage in using +p+ in ANYTHING shorter than 5" (and probably longer) barrel as some of the powder doesnt even get a chance to burn off in most if not all cases.

Take care.

To those manufacturers that rate +P+, do they also say no reloads? If not, load up a double or triple charge, put on a welding glove and fire that bitch off. According to the manual, it should be fine, right?
