A gun safe really comes down to how much a person wants to spend. I hear gunvaults are nice, but they aren't cheap. Any safes with the biometric fingerprint access are nice but again, VERY expensive. Me personally I went with a brinks safe at walmart, it's metal and has a electronic combination lock with keyed backup. Locks sturdy enough for me, and where I have it sitting by my bed the light through my window allows me to see the keypad fairly easily. I think it cost me $25, and I believe others on here have this same safe and are happy with it.

Thanks for the quick reply, I'm also willing to spend $100 or less. With a toddler at home I also want to place it in a higher location.

have you tried doing a search online for pistol safe? I know I have looked at several safes online, and in stores and they all seemed the same. Some had keypad only locks, some had keypad/key locks. In the end I think if the safe is just used for your pistol, then it doesn't have to be armored like fort knox. Unless you plan to keep anything valuable inside it. But personally I'm happy with the safe I purchased. It locks strong enough, and unless you can guess my combination you won't get in. I didn't like the idea of a key lock only safe because I can't tell you how many times I misplace keys. Fnding keys in the dark would be a pain in the butt. I keep a flashlight right with my safe so I can see m combination. But I also practice opening it in the dark. There's 6 buttons on it, so with enough practice I'm beginning to be able to open it perfectly almost every time.
If I were you, I'd go to a walmart or similar store and look at smaller sized safes that they have to get an idea from them. Then look up online, in gun shops if you have them or even sporting good stores sometimes have them. Then you get an idea for what you want, what you don't want and what each safe provides as far as function and security.. and also price. I saw safes for $100 that didn't offer anymore than what my $25 did. |

I have two of these, one upstairs, and one in the basement. I ues them to keep my carry guns in when not in use, so that I don't have to load and unload them all the time. I got mine at Gander Mountain for about $60.00.

I looked at the stack-on's as well, and the only thing they offered were a better pry resistant locking mechanism. The way I see it is unless you use that safe to store valuables or important documents, then it probably doesn't matter that it's more pry resistant. I think most pistol safes are simply used to keep kids out of guns. I didn't feel like paying $60 for a safe that essentially had the same features as a $25 one. Someone prying my safe open for my gun is highly unlikely to happen while I'm home with it. The safe I have is easily transportable if you need to take it with you somewhere.
Again, get what works best for you... but be sure to compare them to eachother before you buy. You don't need fort knox to protect the pistol in your house unless it's one made for long term storage of guns that aren't your defense guns. Here is the one I have http://www.siscoproducts.com/cgi-bin...__1/cat_id__32 it is model 4035D and it cost me $25. Nobody in your house will get into that any easier than they will some other safe. Like I said, if someone breaks into your house... if they have enough time to get to that and somehow pry it open before you can do something about.. then something is wrong. But it will protect your gun from unwanted use and keep it out of childrens reach. If you want, drill holes in the bottom and bolt it to the floor as others have done. |

Hurry and go to Fry's Electronics. I just got a 60lb Brinks Safe, which has a keyed and illuminated keypad entry for $79.99.
it is .7 cu feet and is fire retardent for an hour at 1,700 degrees.

What do you guys think of this safe?
I want one of these for storing the pistol at night. It seems easy to get into in the dark and enough to keep kids out of. But I haven't heard anything good or bad about this brand.[/url]

I think they're good, I looked at one just the other day at the shooting range. I had been thinking about getting one, then I decided I could use that extra money toward other stuff so that's why I got a cheaper one. One thing I didn't like about those though, was when I put my hand on the fingerpad it felt really wide for my hand. Fingers spread more than I'd like. But they're built heavy and I'm sure would be easy to get into without having to look at it, as long as you press the button down with enough pressure. That's the only way I'd think you wouldn't get the combination entered correctly. I don't know how big your hands are, but for me my hand didn't have a natural feel on it. One other thing I don't think I'd like about it, is it's a front open... I would find it easier to get into something that opens from the top.. you could easily grab it and not have to first try to pull it out before you can pick it up.
