to port or not to port? advice please.

im planning ordering a XD in 40.cal in the next few days. Im thinking id like to have a ported version "link below" but thought id ask some qustions from the experts "that would be you guys"

First,does haveing the ported barrel reduce accurcy?Also does the gas that exits the ported barrel cause any extra wear on the finish of the gun.

Also if i get a moddle that is not melonite coated is there a place i can send it to later in its life to get that coating put on.Iv heard these guns have a tendency to get a little rust and after break in and getting used to the gun it will be kept for fairly long periods in a dresser drower or on my night stand and i hate for it to unknowingly rust. i was thinking about a glock32 for only that resone but liked the way the XD fit my hands. thanks for any advice you guys can give.

It may reduce your initial accuracy, as the added noise and compression may worsen your flinch. It will certainly allow for faster follow up shots, provided you are not shooting in the dark.

Also does the gas that exits the ported barrel cause any extra wear on the finish of the gun.

It leads to a need to clean more of the gun, because more internals get dirtier. Externally, my finish is fine. But the the internal area in the slide where the ports are is rough and pitted. Not something that causes me worry.

Don't get it if its sole purpose is home defense or for carry, unless you plan on getting a Barsto unported barrel to go with.

Porting does not change the accuracy at all, ported barrels actually offer a lighter recoil then non-ported barrels, thus, giving you a faster, "back on target sight acquisition".


Ported barrels do not cause the finish to wear off , but they will get your front sight and the outside of your gun dirtier then non-ported models.


With improper care anything metal will rust.

Just take care of your gun. Can you get the new finish melonite put on it? not with the current finish on it, its not just a finish, it actually treat's the metal. The new XD45ACP has the new melonite finish, I just read here on the forum today that other new XD models are NOW getting the melonite finish. Check the production date if you can of the one you are buying.

Target / sport / personal protection at home / carrying it with you?


Ported models give off a LOT of FLAMES out the ports on the top of the gun when you pull the trigger. Some people (not me) find this messes with their vision, especially in low light situations. Some people complain that the flames will ignite your clothes on fire if you shoot from the hip. I have never shot mine from the hip so I can't respond to this claim.


I did have a V10 9mm XD and loved it, ran about 2-3K rounds thru it. I had some problems with it and got a XD 45ACP to replace it, compliments of Springfield Armory. I have only run about 130 rounds thru it so far and love it.

Any certain reason why you want the ported barrel? If it is reduction in recoil, then I would go with non-ported and get Don's Guide Rod with Wolff 22# spring. Or get a 9mm. TASF's recommendation of the extra non-ported barrel is a good one, but more expense. It is going to depend on your use. Ported weapons are best for range weapons and not daily carry. If you shoot one in low-light or in close-combat situations you will understand why.

yea i guess i did not think about that lol. i just thought it lookd cool . i'll just get the normal version. i wounder if i can have the gun shop spacificly order one of the new XD's that come in the melonite. i would love to have a .45 but at 20 bucks a box for reguler ammo it is probly a bit out of my price range to shoot.

I just picked up some S&B 45 ACP ammo last night from Cabalas for 9.99 for a box of 50. WWB was going for 14.99 a box for a box of 50. Their ammo box deal was 300 rounds of remanufactured for 79.99 which comes to 13.33 for a box of 50. Yea, shooting a 45 is expensive.

I have a V10. My third trip to the range I decided to buy a non-ported EFK barrel and I haven't used the ported barrel since.

If you think you may want a ported barrel, I would recommend buying a non-ported version and shoot it. If you still want a ported barrel, buy after market so it doesn't vent undeneath/through the slide (after market ported barrels are a tad longer and have the ports cut in the end).

I suspect the replacement ported barrels retain much of the velocity (since the ports are beyond the normal 4" of barrel length).

If you decide to go with the V10, get a DGR to make cleanup a little easier.
