Black Bear Defense, What's your suggestions
I carry an XDM .45 compact 3.8" as my EDC weapon just wondering if this would serve me well for the purpose of protection while I'm up hunting or hiking. I have thought about getting a Desert Eagle in either .44 or 50AE down the road partially for this purpose but mostly for the fun of owning a small cannon. However I am curious what to expect of trusty carry compact if I ever encounter an enemy with thicker skin. Also any cartridge suggestions for maximizing the .45ACP potential against thick skinned game?

Desert Eagles are finiky. I shot one and I slammed the Magazine in like I would on any handgun and the owner told me "oh great now it wont shoot." You have to gently insert the magazine for some reason. They are extremely heavy is that really what you want to take hiking?
If you just want to own the biggest handgun go with the S&W 500. You can get the T-Rex thumpers 700 gr. round. You could hunt a bear with that bullet. Best part it will shoot when you pull the trigger.

good to know about them being finicky.. not sure why anyone would want a $1000-$1900 handgun that you couldn't knock around perhaps I'll just stick with an 870 shotgun for bear defense.

+1 on the Desert Eagle being finicky. A buddy of mine has two, a .50, .44, and has a .357 barrel also. Every single time I've gone out to shoot them with him he has a malfunction of some sort on just about every mag. They're high on the cool factor but I would never consider one as a defensive gun.
If the .45ACP ends up being your only option I would load it up with some quality 230gr ball.
I think a .460S&W revolver would suffice...

.41M or.44M is the min I would want if I knew there were possibly bears in the area. Still love and miss my old Ruger .41 Mag Blackhawk

You are more likely to be killed by bee sting than by a black bear. Don't worry about it.

I think one reason desert Eagles are so finicky is that magnum rounds tend to have a lot of variety in their power levels. I don't know what a valid excuse for the 50AE would be though.
If they come up with a cabine kit for the DE, I might get one, but otherwise there are so many more practical guns out there I have yet to buy, like a 338 RUM or 50 BMG

My vote would be for the 460 S&W. It would also allow you to shoot 45LC and 454 Casull without a cylinder change.
