I have found pieces of lead and copper in a deer but didn't save it. Only time I ever got the actual bullet was when I was Muzzle loader hunting. It went through the deer, hit a little sapling dead center and fell ontop of the snow. Still have it.

I have never found a bullet in a deer.
I shoot a .243, plenty of power and a straight shooter for the PA whitetails (no bait allowed here like those other cheater states). I'd say that most of the deer I've shot over the last 16 years of hunting had complete pass through but you get the occasional one that hits a rib on the opposite side dead center and comes to rest against the hide. I don't have a tally of how many deer I've shot but to be conservative we'll call it two per rifle season and I think I've only got about 4 to 6 bullets at home in the gun safe.

Ive never found a bullet or even a partial. But then again a .30-06 usually always has an exit hole! No traditions here other than every year you most get a bigger deer (points wise) than the previous season or shoot a doe. And a mandatory beer after the kill.(buck or doe)

Why did you feel you had to kill your uncle? Was grandpa pissed at him and handed you his M1?
