crossbow hunting I have no idea what Im doing
I know as much about crossbows as my parents do about video games.
so looking at this, 150lbs 285 fps horton yukon SL
local forum here
F/S Horton Yukon crossbow with climbing stand. $200 or trade. - MGO Community Forum
I have no interest in learning as much about bows as I think I know about guns
basically interest is in deer hunting, and maybe to shoot it inside my house from one end to the other for fun
285 can I ethically and safely engage a deer in MI? pretty bg deer up here. How far? I've heard of people going to 60 yards but pretty sure their bows are running 360 or so. No idea if the scope is junk I'm calling to find out, if it is I have stuff I can put on there.
This would open up another season to my dad and I, I could keep the stand or sell it (is it worth more than $30?) opinions?
Other thoughts how much upkeep do these need, do I need to replace the string right away to be safe? other questions to ask?

if you get all that with the sale I would probably try to make a deal on it. I would want to shoot it before I take it though.

as in price to high?200 for all of that scope is horton ultra range 4x32 sso047 75 buck scope, 200 dollar bow from my googling skills,
taking this thing hunting would it do the job well or would I get ticked off using it? Like I would take a remington 710 hunting, but anything cheaper quality I wouldn't
assuming I can shoot it what should I offer? he got it to even out a trade and played with it and it sat for a year..... so he is ambivilent if I make a fair offer I think he'd take it.

Dad had a 150lb non-compound crossbow growing up. I stuck some large head small game arrowheads on it, and it would put a real hurting on pumpkins compared to compound bow that was more than enough for deer, when shooting the same heads into comparable pumpkins.

I'm Texas the crossbow is considered a rifle and can only be use in open rifle season and not in archery season. Just FWI I have no idea about MI.

Michigan you can use it for any season and you need a free crossbow stamp.

personally if it shot and I felt ok about it, I'd give the 200.
if you go to shoot it and it feels sifty to you consider what it might need. I don't know much about them to really give advice on what to look for but it seems like a bargain.
the extent of my experience with crossbows would be playing with one killing cans of generic soda and a cooler in my friends back yard. it was a lot of fun and we didnt run out of ammo.

I had a barnett quad 400, was a nice crossbow. I got rid of it cause I prefer my bow over the crossbow. Make sure you get a good string cocking device! some string wax and wax the strings every 5-10 shots. DONT use a standard archery target for a cross bow either you will pass right through it and burn off your fetching or you will need some vice grips to get them out of the target! Crossbow bolts can be $$ but to answer your 1st question yes, a cross bow will definitely smoke a michigan white tail deer!

That seems to be a fairly good deal for $200 look at the strings around the cams and where they contact the rails, look for wear. just beware that crossbow is somewhat dated already!

didn't know about that, I assume in bow season then you can only take 1 with it? I'm cool with that

ok what do I need to do for a target/how much will it cost me, any practical ways to make my own affordably? He said it was a noisy bow from his perspective, but from my thinking at 40 yards, and 285 it won't have enough time regardless. Comes with 6 bolts, I'll probably never run out. waxing the string, I have no idea how to do that, what type of wax, cost again and so on. I imagine just a block of wax go up one side down the other, cock it, do again so you can wax what was on the cams.
side note, a bow for someone that needs a 33" draw is not cheap, and takes a whole lot more time to practice, and with my back not good yet I wouldn't be able to start practicing for another 2 months or so.

considering I just want to hunt with it not become a hobbyist (though I might open my door to the garage and shoot through my house for practice ) how much will restringing cost? I'm thinking bow string to my face will ruin my career options so how hard is it to restring/cost would it be good to just do now.
oh while on topic, how do you unload a crossbow? dry firing is bad from what I recall from the picture I do not believe there is a cocking device so do I need one or just want one?
