Sighting incline vs. decline v.s horizontal target view
Hi,
I've mostly been target shooting and trying to get some gear together for a hog hunt. So I went to my LGS and was asking about range finders. The sales mentioned that some range finders will give you hold over and hold under recommendations based on your elevation angle to the target.
So it got me wondering how others address this. If you are shooting inside of say 200 yards is there a dramatic hold over or hold under if your shooting from a tree stand vs. ground level?
I'm shooting a .308 with 150grain ammo. You think it's worth the extra dollars for a range finder that has this additional calculation in it?
Or is this just something you need to learn by doing. That is try shooting targets from a few different positions so you know how your rifle shoots from those positions?

at 200 yds no. At a 15% angle a .308 will hit about a 1/2 inch high at 200 yds, this would be some thing to think about if shooting over 400 yds and angles of 15% and more the main thing as to remember when shooting at a angle you will hit higher. the range you will be shooting Hogs at will not be enough to matter.

Hi,
Thanks. That makes me feel better.
I've shoot paper for a while and you don't have to think about this stuff for paper. Generally it horizontal and your shot will be flat.
The more I learn about rifle shooting the more I have a new appreciation for the skills needed to do it well. The day I went to zero my scope at 200 yards I recall thinking, "holy crap and some people do this with iron sights!"
Thanks,
Mike

The only time you need to worry about the effects of bullet travel while shooting up or down hill is if you are in the mountaing shooting 500 to 1000 yard shots down the moutain or up the moutain, like goat hunting. You can get charts to tell you how much to hold over or under if you do so don't buy expensive optics to do it.

Hi,
Sounds good. Do you know what those charts are called? I tried to google for something like this but only found ballistic charts for .308 cal. None of them had angle compensation on them.
Thanks,
Mike

back in the early 80s I shot NRA Hi-Power rifle, a lot to be learned when shooting 600yards with peep sights.

Hi,
Wow 600 yards with iron sites! Even a man size target has to look tiny.
