I see hunting large animals with a handgun, isnt much different than hunting with a bow and arrow. (which happens successfully more times than people realize) Just my two cents!

I once killed 3 cape buffalo in one shot with my trusty 10mm.

Ive bowhunted for moose, whitetail, black bear, not elk I know, but very very different than with a handgun. Comes down to the way an arrow works versus a bullet. An arrow flies at about 220 fps(mine does at least im sure there are faster bows) and with the broad heads (fixed, mechanical) its designed to make a wound channel about 1-2" in diameter depending on application. A handgun, unless its a something like a .454 casul (which if Im not mistaken was invented for hunting) are pretty much useless against large game because they are designed to drop a person primarily and not a large game animal.
Of course im excluding hogging from the mix because thats just fun with a big a$$ handgun.

While not an elk, I have (and know several people who have) taken deer with defensive handgun calibers (.45 acp, .357 magnum, 10mm, and even a 9mm).

With a properly constructed bullet, deep penetration is almost guaranteed and with proper placement can lead to quick and humane kills.

It's no different than bowhunting.

I am going to have to side with Pappa on this one.

There is a big difference between slicing and high speed smashing.

Also important to check the local hunting regulations wherever you are....I know in Wyoming there are very specific caliber regulations when it comes to big game. Many handgun calibers do not qualify.

If you use a bullet that will get a double lung hit, and/or puncture the heart/aorta...it doesn't matter if it slices it or smashes it.

Damage is damage.

but the damaged area isn't the same half inch diameter vs. 2 inch diameter. slices also uses much less energy than crushing.

baloney, a 223 sp to the head will pop an elk's eyeballs out of its skull, to 100 yds or a bit further. The Motor City Madman, Nugent, took a Cape buffalo with a 10mm spine shot. I assume that he was in a tree stand, directly above it, but dunno. I met a guy in Rhodesia who had taken 3 buff with a 357. It's not that big a deal, almost no elk charge after being shot. If they did, it wouldn't be feasible to hunt them with a bow.
