XD-9 Tactical Report
Took my XD-9 Tactical, with only 400 rounds through it, to the range today with a buddy. We put 250 more rounds of Rem-UMC down range. I had 0 failures.
When my friend was firing, the slide failed to lock open about 4 times after the last round was fired. He also caught 2 casings during ejection. Last time I was at the range the slide also failed to lock open after the last round about 2 or 3 times...but after some advice from the forums, I attributed it to having my thumb on the slide release. On at least one occasion, I watched my friend's thumb to see if he was doing the same thing...but he wasnt, and the slide failed to stay open once again. Any ideas? Some part I need to clean or lubricate a little more? |

the amount of pressure on the slide release can be very slight but still cause it to not lock open. I had the same problem. Thats my guess.
I just don't see it being a cleaning/lubrication issue. XD's are just too well made. |

Magazine...
How many magazines are you using? It is possible that you are only having this problem with one or maybe two of them? If the follower or the spring are worn it could very easily be causing this. Admitedly I have never owned an XD or looked closely at one of their magazines (I will be buying one as soon as I get back to the states), but I have seen this problem on other pistols I have owned/fired. More often than not, it's the magazine.

It is likely the thumb, but it could be the magazine as JAK mentioned. It is not a cleaning and/or lubrication problem. When I first got my XD I was doing this occasionally. I swore it wasn't my thumb, but it was.

I had the same problem with my XD when I first got it. I was shooting 115 gr. and it was not locking back after the last shot most of the time. I called Springfield and they told me to try shooting 124 gr. for a while and that should weaken the spring enough so the 115 gr. should work fine. I then shot several hundred rounds through of the 124 gr. with no problem. I then went back to shooting the 115 gr. and everything is fine. Have had no failures to lock back with about 700 rounds through of the 115 gr. bullets. Hope this helps.
