Shot an XD for the first time. Questions...
I went to the local range yesterday and rented an XD-9. My dad and sister came along. We all loved it, though my sister had some issues with it, and I was wondering if you guys can explain what happened...
1. Failure to feed? Is that what it's called? We only put 4 rounds in the magazine at a time. Sometimes (and this only happened when she was holding the gun) the slide would lock back like if the gun were empty, except there was still one more round in the magazine. All we had to do was release the slide, and fire... That happened I think 3 times, I think all on the last round. 2. Umm, this... ![]() How did she manage this? I still have no clue. The bullet fired, but the shell didn't eject properly I guess. |

duurrrrrty ass rental gun equals less reliability usually. a well taken care of xd can handle 1000 rounds without a failure.

I'd guess its a case of severe "limp wristing" the gun. When a person "limp wrists" the gun isnt stable and the slide doesnt come back far enough to chamber another round or it causes the thumb to contact the slide release and locks the slide to the rear.
The picture of her failure to eject is likely also a symptom of limp wristing. Slide, again, didnt come back far enough to allow time for the spent casing to fully clear the ejection port. Basically, get a better grip with the off hand and stabilize the gun.

Limp wrist + rental = bad news. It probably has never been cleaned.

The gun also wasn't exactly spotless, but it was very accurate for my dad and I. We're probably going to buy one soon, maybe the XD-M. |

This is called a "stovepipe," or failure to eject. She was most likely "limp wristed," as stated.

a lot of time if someone limp wrists and has a light grip the gun will climb in the strong hand as you put more rounds through it (backwards force is converted to upwards force because it has an easier escape). this would cause her to have an even worse grip and increase the odds of a FTF. stovepipe is probably a combination of limp wrist and dirty extractor |

The XD will stovepipe if limp wristed. I was out shooting with my friend and his wife, and his wife could reliably make the gun stove pipe as a result of limp wristing.
The slide might be locking back prematurely if the shooter's thumb rides really high and pressed up against the slide lock lever.
