So a Sig P220, a Springfield XD 45 and 150 rds walk into a range
Now stop me if you have heard this before....
Ha ha... I'm a new guy to the XD forum here and I had to come up with some type of catchy intro here. But honestly, this is a comparison between the 2 weapons. I acquired a Springfield XD 45 the other day and today was the first time I was able to get to the range. Here are some specifics. My Sig is a W German (manufactured around 1989 Enter the new kid on the block. A Springfield XD 45 service edition with factory sights. Round count isn't that much around 500; but... So I picked up 3 boxes of 45 acp. 1 box to shoot the new Springfield (get adjusted to how it feels) and then the other two for my test. ![]() So now this was done INDOORS (at precision) at 30'. Both guns fired 50 shots, steady target style shooting. The verdict? Here is the Springfield XD's results. ![]() Here is a close up: ![]() And now, old faithful.... I have no idea where that flier came from. It happened about half way thru! ![]() ![]() Close up: ![]() My initial impression of the Springfield? It's a nice gun. It reminds me a lot of my first generation Glock 21 I bought new back in 1991 and carried daily, but smaller and more compact. The trigger feels better than the Glock too. All I'm going to say is that I am really impressed with the Quality and build of the XD and think that it is DEFINITELY a good choice/addition to the Sig... Now, I've got a few mods that I want to do to make it "me". The main 2 mods you ask? Bo Mar style sights - I want to use this for NRA Action pistol - iron sights division A better guide rod Then, maybe, a trigger mod. But for now, the Sig still rules the roost! |

Just curious. What did the first box through the sig look like. Was it as tight as it is now or maybe a little more open like the XD.

I too have some P220's and some XD-45's. I keep going back and forth on which I use. I find them both to be very good and lately I've been carrying the XD. But the other day I had an unusual test of loyalty. I am one of those "Always have a gun guys." But I've been sick. Literally, "In bed" for a few days. So somehow I managed to have all my guns locked up in the safe. And the home alarm system (Bullmastiff) was visiting with the ex-wife. Mid-day I'm jolted awake by a noise at the back door. I look over and there is NO GUN on the nightstand. After telling myself what an idiot I am, I crack the safe and see the go-to's all laid out. I stop for a moment to think which handgun do I want to take out? No second thoughts. I grab the P220. Hmmm. I guess I do have a favorite. But had I grabbed an XD45 I certainly would have felt just as ready.

I have done the same test with a more recent P220 and the targets looked opposite of yours!!!
Nice blasting.

Nah, it was like the Sig but a little worse. Then again, I "inherited" the weapon in 1991 when I turned 21. Before the Sig, the only Semi-auto I had shot was a Smith model 59 (9mm) I owned. My revolvers I owned at the time was a S&W model 10 (standard 4" bbl) and a S&W model 66 (2-1/2" bbl). I remember the first time I qualified with the Sig in 1992, my B-27 target at 50 yards looked like I had shot it with some #8 shot. As I shot more (learning the weapon and myself) I increasingly got better. I also found out that I was right handed and left eye dominant! And as far as parts to the Sig, all are factory parts, I just clean it after every range or shooting competition. I did keep an extra guide rod and spring and used to swap them out about every 6 months. That was when I was shooting either a NRA Action Pistol match or IPSC match every weekend ( 1995 - 1998 ) The guy I bought the Xd from said that the trigger felt choppy at first and was starting to get better(around 300-500 rounds). When I shot that first box thru it, I could feel a little choppiness (like the 1st gen Glock model 21 I have), but it still felt better. So, at 38, I can group the Sig like above (owned it for 16 yrs). I'm planning on keeping the XD and at 54 (that will be 16 yrs) I'll have the XD group down to match the Sig by then.... hehe Last edited by nickatnite : 05-11-2008 at 12:07 AM. |
