Range report and questions (pics).

So I had to shave my head yesterday and was feeling pretty bummed; I figured that I would cheer myself up with some shooting. I have a new XD9 Service and was wanting to go out and get more comfortable with it. It's my first handgun and as I am new to handgun shooting, I'm determined to get faster and accurater. And yes, I know I made that word up. Verbing weirds words.

Anywho, I'm noticing some trends in my shooting and would like the forum's opinions on what I might be doing wrong and what I can do to improve my shots. On the whole, I am shooting down and to the left. I've read some of the comments in the forum and the common recommendation that I've seen has been to "squeeze" rather than "pull the trigger" and to use the pad of the finger on the trigger. I concentrated on both of those during this shoot (except for the 'rapid fire' shots) and am still noticing the pattern.

All ammo was some cheap Blazer 115gr 9mm that I got from Wallyworld (yay $8.79/50rd special!), except for one set that I did in order to get more acquainted with what my friend calls my "social" ammo: 124gr. +p GoldDot.

This was the first set that I did. I'm noticing that JHP make a much cleaner punch than the Blazer. Is this because that +P ammo has a higher velocity or is it b/c it is a hollow point?

32 rounds at 7yds.

Here's 32 rds at 7 yards with the Blazer

after that I tried to shoot at 15 yards. Again, the Blazer

At this point I decided that I wanted to see how I shot when shooting as fast as I could pull the trigger. The range was empty so I asked the rangemaster for permission. He said "OK" so this was the result:

7 yards (love that flyer at the bottom):

and again, emptying the mag as fast as I could at 15 yards (don't know where the 11th round went):

Now to clean up, I wanted to finish off my boxes with some more controlled shots. I was much happier with this grouping.

7 yards:

and at 15 yards:

What I would like is to get 2" groups at 7 yards and 4" groups at 15 (with the occasional flyer excepted). What can I do to improve?

.

I think you should work on your Accuratation and that means slowing down. Put one round in a magazine and fire it. A full loaded mag makes you want to rush plus you have to many holes to think about. Just worry about what went wrong on the one hole.

Practice breathing, Practice stance, make it a zen like thing. Once you can do it perfect each time start working on the speed.

Take a spent round and an empty gun. Set the round on top of the gun and pull the trigger slowly (DRY FIRE). It should sit there. If it doesn’t you are probably not pulling the trigger properly.

+1. Sometimes slower is better.
