Good News!/Shooting Low
For those of you that followed my "shooting low" thread, there is good news! I'm fixed!...well, sort of...I'm DEFINITELY flinching, and i believe it's the root of my problems. How do I know this? I tried a Glock...and it's the first pistol I've fired that is true DAO. And...to be honest...I LOVED it. Well, the trigger, at least. The stronger trigger pull was something that I wasn't used to, so I had no idea when the trigger would break. Although there were some occasional low shots, I was doing pretty good the whole day. I was shooting a Glock 26. Overall I think the build quality of the XD is MUCH better, but I will say i loved the Glock trigger. I'm actually considering switching from an XD to Glock, although Ihaven't purchased yet so there's still time to think. I know that in the end I'll probably like the XD much more (after I can consistently shoot better), but the Glock works for me right now...I dunno...
But I also shot an XD9 tactical, and had similar results, although quote a few more low hits. I found the tactical to be much harder to control then the G26. Here's the targets, I was also shooting my P22 a bit: G26 - I'm pretty sure this was done entirely with the G26, with my P22 off to the sides and bottom. This was one mag of sustained fire with long pauses, and one mag sustained fire with moderately short pauses. All the .22 was shot as fast as teh range would allow (around 1-2/second). The G26 was at 5 yards, P22 at 10. ![]() Just the G26. Head was at 5 yards, body at 10. The few holes in "C" were flinches. ![]() XD9 Tac body, rest P22. I simply couldn't shoot the XD9 at a fast rate of fire without going all over the place. ![]() I'm happy with the P22 results as well...that will be the gun used to qualify for my CCW. So far my solution for the flinching is to just shoot A LOT more. |

Well, it is good that you determined it was flinching. It is a VERY common thing, so don't feel like it is just you, or just your gun. If you like the Glock better, then great, but I would wait until you have your flinching under control before you determine what gun suits you best. Flinching with any gun is a bad thing. If you take the time to dry fire at home it will help your flinching tremendously!

Yeah, I hear dry firing is good for that. I only own the P22, so I'll have to do it with that for now. Hopefully that practice will translate to the other guns.

try practiceing with a 22 semi-auto pistol. Also get someone to load mags for you mixed with snap caps and live rounds. Shoot them at the range and that helps alot with your problem

If you're having problems with flinching, then don't worry about rapid firing. Take it slow. Once you can accurately shoot slowly, the time between shots will naturally decrease.
Edit: Oh yeah...and I wouldn't buy a Glock for the trigger. It's only masking your problem, not fixing it. Spend some more time with both and see which you like better for all the other reasons.

Oooh man, I'm no neat freak, but you gotta be more careful of your equipment than that. As I said I'm not a neat freak but I ALWAYS clean my guns after every day of shooting and sometimes I'll do so several times a day. I was real anal during the break in of my AR-15 to the point of using fire-lapping bullets and cleaning about every 25 shots, but I was not so anal with my XD. Still, I'd recommend getting into the habit of cleaning everytime you shoot and if you plan to put, say, 500 rounds through it on that day then I'd clean it twice or more. Just think of it as a break that gives you a chnace to think about your technique and perhaps limit the soreness that might develop if shooting that many rounds. Brian |

I usually do clean after every shoot, however I didn't have a cleaning kit until today. Usually when I shoot I'm with my dad and can use his gear, however the last few times he was not there.
The barrel was pretty good, but lots of crap everywhere else. |

Thanks for the post, I've always shot low with my SC9, but am getting better with time.

If you need to rapid fire on a person, you are generally overkilling anyway. I don't know a case when a double or triple tap to the sternum would not do the trick. A controlled follow up shot or two should do the job in any situation. That being said, I don't think a heavy trigger is the answer. After shooting for extended periods of time on a regular basis you will build up a natural calmness while shooting. This will fix the problem and then you can shoot everything!
